Support for audiobooks

They blocked an entire provider hetzner because of selling. I’d assume Linux installs would out weigh windows based on how prevalent plex selling is, they aren’t paying extra for windows licenses lol. Plus all the unraid and NAS that support docker/native installs.

you are right. I asked that question and got this answer from OttoKerner , “I know that Windows is by far the largest slice of the pie.”

I think you are vastly underestimating how many people just have a server on their gaming PC shared with their non-tech friends and family vs hos many are finding Plex on their own, but are not willing to host their own server.

i just run plex on my laptop (windows 11), i use Audnexus to grab my audiobook metadata from audible (audiobooks that they have stopped selling can still be found if you search by the ASIN)

Nevermind, plex has suddenly broken this, now I can’t open any mka files on the android apps. Very annoying and painful. Works on my Samsung TV plex app, Roku, and the browser though

I gave up waiting for Plex to properly support Audiobooks, and went with AudioBookShelf instead.

I have been stuggling to find tagging software that edits embedded QT chapters.

I found mp4chaps (part of the mp4v2 project, older binaries are found at: https://code.google.com/archive/p/mp4v2/downloads) able to convert embedded m4b chapters between QT and Nero, as well as export/import chapter metadata to a text file.

I can now add/edit embedded chapter mark locations with mp4chaps; bulk-rename Nero chapters with mp3tag; and convert the renamed Nero chapters to QT with mp4chaps so ffprobe/Audiobookshelf sees them.

So I’ve made the jump to start moving my audiobook library to single-file m4b’s, instead of track-split.

Plexamp for playback of audiobooks works well.

At least Plexamp now correctly stores the progress on a playlist or individual title correctly which is still not working for the main Plex media app on Android.

The audnexus plugin still works well for matching titles
If you are using Plex Server via Docker / Helm, you need to play some games with the dynamic plugin folder each time you upgrade the Plex Server. The name path to the plugin folder will change each time, and the mapping needs to be updated manually if you upgrade. ( I only upgrade very 3 months because of this )

I agree this is the most reliable method to use today.
Works very well
If you as using Plex server in Docker or Helm, then you need to play some games with the dynamic plugin folder structure. Each time you upgrade the folder name changes and needs t to be remapped. There are ways to solve this however.

I am a Plex user of many years and love it.
However I have moved all my books to Audiobookshelf which is absolutely excellent. Like Plex it works as a server/client application and apps are available for Android and a beta release for IOS. Backend runs on Windows, Docker and Linux. All free (donations etc).
Well worth having a look at https://www.audiobookshelf.org/

I stupidly deleted my plex VM when I upgraded the hardware. Again I stupidly made a lot of changes within plex instead of the underlying tagging. Not wanting to have to spend ages getting things back to how they were I gave audiobookshelf a go.

While audiobookshelf has some good features, it’s laking in others. The filtering just isn’t as good as plexamp, there’s no ability for smart collections etc. I think I’m going to stick with plex and cling on to the faint hope that plex may finally give audiobooks support an update.

The trouble is Plex doesn’t get the basics right for audio books (as it simply does not support audiobooks), so it may have some advanced features that some will find useful, but if it can’t do the basics what’s the point.
Conversely Audiobookshelf does get the basics right and it seems solid and reliable. Personally I am not interested in things like smart groups for an audio book system (although it is quite useful for videos).
The biggest short-coming of Audiobookshelf is that the IOS app has not been released yet (still in closed beta).

This feature request was first made over 10 years ago. The thread has over a thousand comments… I suggest that someone write an article for the Harvard Business Review about this feature request entitled “How not to listen to customers”

Apple killed support for Audiobooks you rip yourself in iTunes, both for WIndows and Mac, and there is no support in the replacement Music app. And the books app on IPhone no longer supports audiobooks you rip yourself. For the love of God and everything holy…Please…please…build…this…feature

Any updates? Please let us know that this is still being worked on.

So I take it that means “no.”

For my use case plex + plexamp actually work quite well. It would have taken far longer to get my collection working well with audio bookshelf. It’s just too clunky for me to invest time in.

All plex needs for me is m4b chapter support. The nice to haves are series support, boxset support, inline collections, multiple artists etc.

How do you mean “Clunky”?
I found it so easy to setup and enter books and collections and the Android app just works - no drama.
Plex is too much like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole when it comes to audiobooks.

I think they mean installing ABS with Docker is a challenge.
It isn’t really. But anyway, you can install ABS directly on Windows now.

Yes - I installed on Windows which was easy and went without a hitch.
