While getting ready for implementing a new mac mini media center, I discovered Plex. Fantastic looking product. All the media options I need seem to be here in one interface, except for EyeTV integration and ebook/document support.
I understand that EyeTV support is not going to happen and I understand the reasoning. However, I can’t see anything concerning support for ebooks. Looking at the version 9 video and the options for displaying and organizing movies, I can easily imagine the same functionality being used for displaying eBooks and eBook categories. And while there are other eReader apps available, having the document option integrated in a common media interface like Plex would greatly enhance the accessibility and organizational tools for an ebook library.
Any chance an ebook feature can be added somewhere on your todo list?
Welcome to the forums!
I think support for ebooks is highly unlikely. I don’t really see how this would be helpful in a media center that is designed to be used on large screen TVs utilizing a ten foot interface. There are already plenty of good apps that you can use to read ebooks on your laptop.
Sorry to necro this thread, but I would ask you to reconsider. An ebook management system integrated into Plex would be wonderful particularly since there is currently no really good ebook media server available for less than several thousand dollars (ok, Calibre is decent, and Open Source, but the implementation of most of its features is too complex and rigid)...
AND, more importantly, you're now targeting mobile platforms (iOS and Android) with Plex clients... and iOS & Android are frequently used as eBook readers.
I, like the OP, am envisioning a eBook library organized by folder hierarchy and filename, metadata agents to gather data (Calibre uses a similar concept with metadata plugins). Basically, I'd have Plex present the eBook files with cover art and synopsis, etc... and a click downloads the file. No streaming or bookmark handling involved.. just click to download a local copy.
Anyway, THANK YOU for Plex and for reading this...

I would have to agree that an ebook manager would be an outstanding addition to Plex.
My family and I will be setting up our own Plex server for a 5 year trip we’re about to take across the US in an RV. Since Internet access and TV access will be limited, we’re going to bring a huge database of movies, tv shows, ebooks, pictures and home movies with us. So far Plex can handle all of it, except the ebooks.
I’ve been trying to dial in the software we’ll use while on the road, as I’ll have a Mac Mini setup as a media server, connected to all the TV’s in the RV. Right now my only options are flat files or Clibre. I would prefer having in all-in-one solution. If it’s doable, I’d highly suggest it. It would only increase your user base. If someone doesn’t want to use it, simply don’t install the addon or disable the feature. However it’s setup.
But I agree, +1 from me.
Yes, Plex with eBook Library support would be outstanding!
This is because we watch TVShows and read eBooks on our iPads.
i dont get it, why would anyone wanna read a book on his tv? I dont see it as comfortable as on a tablet for example?
I would really love to see ebook support on Plex a la Calibre server
+1 for this feature!
Allright, there’s no reason to use this on your tvscreen but for mobile devices it will be awesome!
A folderbased library for epub, rtf, pdf and cbr (comics) files, with a streaming feature.
As example: I have a real big collection of digital comics… You can’t sync 300 GB of comics on mobile devices but I think you can sync the covers and preload a book / folder / series to your mobile device…
Sorry for my bad english! My native language is german.
This would be amazing!
Any chance of this ever happening?
+1
I essentially use plex with my android devices and eBook reading is a big portion of my phone and nexus use. The integration of eBooks under the same interface would be a big boon.

Another +1…
Being free of using several different apps on my android tablet would be amazing.
Great work either way guys, I love plex!
+1 on this. Calibre has problems with large collections, and Plex could fill this role easily.
No one wants to use Plex to read an ebook on the TV, they want to read the book on there tablet, iPad or laptops...all of which Plex has Media Centers for.
What people want is to use Plex's organization abilities to:

Search a specified directory for all ebooks

Have it go to the web and download metadata and covers

Organize it and make it easy to search and find the book you want by author, title or other metadata categories

Then when you want a book you can download/sync it to that device

Then either open with a built in Plex ebook viewer (would be awesome) or open in the devices default app for ebooks.
+1 for me too.
It's been almost 3 years since the first request for ebook support. And I can understand why 3 years ago it didn't make sense to add ebooks to watch on TVs. But I am confident to say that today most people are using tablets more than there TV to stream and watch movies. And since the tablet is also the perfect device to read ebooks, it is about time that Plex adds that support.
So I hope you are seriously considering ebook support now. I have 4 ipads in my house and we use plex to watch movies, TV Shows, and educational videos. I manage ebooks with several different apps: Amazon Kindle reader, iBooks, and Nook via the cloud and itunes. It would be great if I could put all those books in a single repository and access it from the beutiful PLEX interface when and where ever I wanted (And for right now I would be happy if it would just allow us to launch the ebook from the plex interface into one of the reader apps on the tablet)
You could also incorporate bookmarks right into "On Deck" in the Plex dashboard. It would be perfect for that.
Thank you for Plex and taking the time to read my comment!!!
+1 on this. Calibre has problems with large collections...
I am curious what problems Calibre has on large collections? I currently have almost 10,400 eBooks in my personal Calibre library, and I've not run into any problems with maintaining it that I can remember, or with the Calibre server that I have several friends and family members using too. I guess I'm just confused as to what these problems are, as I've not really run into any yet over the last 3-4 years I've been using it?
CBR/CBZ support would make me wet myself! Sorry to bring up old threads, but there is definitely demand for this feature..
+1 for me!
It would be great to host ebooks/comics on the server and read them from a tablet, phone, anywhere. I am considering Calibre, but a single server for all my media would be fantastic!
+1 for ebooks
I recently brought my kindle on a trip only to realize the battery was dead. I had my ipad but not the ebook file to read. If I could keep them on my media server, that would be an awesome feature
I would love to have all my ebook collection in Plex, to read it on my phone if I don't have my kindle with me. Plus would love to set up ebook collections and delight my self browsing through my book covers on the big screen and showing it off to others :)
I would also love this feature to be added. It would be an invaluable addition to Plex to read comic books on my tablet devices.
To put this feature on the radar of developers, wouldn't we need to make a formal feature request and have that voted up to indicate the popularity?
+1 I was just trying to add this feature. I would really recommend the dev reconsiders; I love to centralize all my media in one place. I use my iPad as an eBook reader it would be great to stream the data instead of using local resources. Also, over 4G this would consume little data, highly feasible for devices on the go with a cellular connection.
