T-Mobile Binge On

I wouldn’t mind starting a bounty if that would get some resources working on it.

i would be in on that too.

Hey PlexPass users, vote for this feature here.

We don’t support adaptive bitrate (yet), and even if we did, it would be hard for them to tell it was us, since the streaming takes places between your device and your server (and it can be an arbitrary port).

Nothing is impossible, it just depends on how hard people want it to happen

Plex would need to work out an arrangement with T-mobile where each Plex server registered with Plex.tv, after opting in and agreeing to be part of binge-on, would also be registered with a t-mobile binge-on web service. (I’m taking a wild guess that t-mobile already has such a service, and guessing that communication with it would need to happen through a single trusted entity, like Plex.tv.)

For service downgrade, Plex server would need to finally implement adaptive bitrate, or, less desirably, maintain a DB of t-mobile networks, and always downgrade when delivering to them if the server opted in to being part of binge on.

The larger question is: Do you want to encourage ISPs to use zero-rating at all? I know t-mobile appears to be trying to zero-rate equally, but as can be seen by the complexity that would be involved in getting Plex to be part of this zero-rate group, the playing field is simply not level enough. No matter how you spin it, it’s an anti-competitive practice. It’s the thin edge of the wedge.

I’d rather encourage zero rating than worry about how much data I’m using watching streaming video. Vote with your dollar doesn’t always work since the alternatives would just charge me for streaming the same data. It’s the lesser of two evils.

Plex and T-Mobile need to work this out

I vote to make this happen

Definitely needs to be an option for binge on!!
