I have subtitles imbedded in my files. all mp4/m4v.
Is there a way to mark a set of subtitles as forced so that automatically play?

There probably is. But Plex is not able to recognise this information.
And I haven’t found a single software solution to embed this information into mp4/m4v files either.
So currently, Plex can only recognise the ‘forced’ flag on subtitles in MKV containers and on external subtitles. How: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200471133-adding-local-subtitles-to-your-media/
Then activate “Automatically Select Audio and Subtitle Tracks”
and select your subtitle language and “Shown with Foreign Audio”

Subler, subler.org, will let you set the forced flag for subtitles in mp4 files. Subler is Mac only. I’m not aware of Windows or Linux s/w with similar capabilities.
As @OttoKerner notes, Plex does not recognize the flag in mp4 containers. The subtitles appear as standard, non-forced subtitles.
