I have 1 Xbox one that is mine that is local to my Plex Server, and 1 Xbox one that is remote that is my brothers.
Both Xbox’s are up to date and running the latest version of the Plex app 2.0.5.70. Both Xbox One’s have the same settings for quality, h.264 level, and burn in subtitles automatically. No subtitles are being used on either stream. One Xbox transcodes the stream, one direct streams. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they do not both direct stream. Maybe there is something in the logs that could point me in the right direction but I am not sure where to start.
Yes his is remote. But if he forces his quality to be original, it should just buffer but not transcode. It should only transcode if you force it to or if the device format cannot support it.
The bitrate of the media, resolution, or format should not matter because it direct streams on my Xbox One which is the same device.

But he is not on your network - he is on the internet!

You cannot compare the two networks
Can you give me some evidence on this? From my understanding it should not matter. The type of network should not matter it is only determined by the streaming device and the video file itself.
