To the Plex Team

I’ve been with Plex for over a decade, and honestly, it’s just sad to see how clueless you guys seem to be. It’s never just “one” thing that ticks people off; it’s always a whole pile of stuff that just builds up. When I first started using Plex, I was totally hooked. I’d brag about it to everyone, tell them to try it out, and if they loved it (which they usually did), I’d push them to get a Plex Pass to support you guys. But over the years, that love just turned into this numb acceptance of the same old crap. It’s like you guys are stuck on repeat:

  1. Drop an update that breaks things for a bunch of users.
  2. Cross your fingers it’s only a small group so you can just ignore them.
  3. If it’s a huge mess, do some damage control (but rarely actually own up to anything).
  4. Finally, fix the damn thing, and everyone’s kinda happy again.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Every single time.

Honestly, the fixes for most of your problems are pretty obvious:

  1. Talk to us! When stuff breaks, acknowledge it right away, say sorry, and tell us you’re working on it. Going silent just makes us feel like you’re ghosting us.
  2. Stop shoving new features and betas down our throats! Give us a clear opt-in for new features, if I uncheck it, I don’t want new features to be automatically enabled.
  3. TEST YOUR STUFF! Seriously, stop releasing updates that consistently break your software to this degree. It’s ridiculous.

It’s wild, but when your updates screw up someone’s setup, the most common advice you hear on social media groups is usually to “buy ‘THIS’ client” instead. My 4K Firesticks crashed for like a year straight, and everyone told me to get an NVIDIA Shield. Then that started crashing, so people pushed me to Roku, which worked for a few months until it began to experience a similar crashing issue. By then, the Firesticks were finally fixed (and shield wasn’t far behind it). It’s a never-ending merry-go-round of finding workarounds just to use your app!

You guys are so bad at handling your users, we jump through hoops just to make your software work. I’ve literally bought different devices just to have a working client, right now users have figured out how to downgrade the iOS app, we have every right to be upset when you guys screw up, but you guys refuse to admit when we have a valid reason to be mad. The fact that we put up with all this crap – including (in my experience) buying new hardware – should tell you how much we actually love Plex (when it’s working, that is). We don’t want to hate on you; we love what Plex can be, and we want it to succeed. But man, you guys make it incredibly hard. Can’t you just learn from a lifetime of the same damn mistakes?
