What do people think of the official response to the terrible New Plex Experience rollout?

https://forums.plex.tv/t/it-s-been-one-week-with-the-new-experience-on-mobile-and-we-re-just-getting-started

I’m feeling like it’s the base minimum and doesn’t really address much except “we see it was a sh*t show and you won’t stay quiet, so it will get better, trust us bro”.

How do you all feel about it? Good? Terrible? In between? Please respond below. Thx!

Violently bad.

Everything is harder, the app is weirdly slow and buggy, navigation takes more clicks/taps/button presses than ever. Plex has had some shockingly bad UI rollouts in the 13 years I’ve been a PlexPass holder but this one takes the cake.

I want to throw up and i’m glad i’ve been side-by-side-ing Jellyfin for the last few years

I love it, some basic features are missing since the change like deleting content via app,
But the new look is stunning and modern. It will probably will take some time lose the muscle memory from the old UI but it’s natural when making those changes

Its a downgrade instead of an update. Its incomplete, only functions half, increadably slow, Its ugly, it lacks many of the basic features, the UI does not store the lastt state. TV is anoyingly on the sufrace while the majority of the world can’t use it. It is really like Sonos bad!

Its insane that this has come through testing!
Plex definitely dropped the ball on this!!!

Remove this downgrade and start over!

I honestly don’t know why Plex doesn’t learn from their previous experience and from Sonos, and didn’t leave the old app in the App Store as Plex Classic for IOS, and then release the new App with the new broken download functionality as a standalone app.

The Classic app would get minimal maintenance, and would eventually be withdrawn when the new app had at least feature parity.

I appreciate that this would be more work, but people use Plex every single day and regressions in functionality affect people and add frustration into their lives.

I know it sounds like first world problems, but people are fighting real battles out there and plex allows them to escape from these.

Yup complete garbage. Unbeliveable actually. To replace a working product with something broken. especially in this space. I just found out that my wife got the latest version and casting doesn’t work. They should really put the old version back and update the beta app until they sort out the problems. Jellyfin you say?

I think we have 2x parallel workstreams on the response. Cute how no-one actually signed it. Just like when Plex, inc admitted to opting in to sharing watched content via email to friends.

Beyond unacceptable rollout from the C-suite to get that milestone payment at end of Q1. Offensively bad. I’m guessing there was barely a MVP and Keith decided to ship to production. Hope it’s a nice boat.

Then there are the rank and file developers who are cleaning up this mess, and unfortunately cannon fodder. Their morale must be in the tank because there is nothing positive to say. Rank and file is banned from updating us paying users on bugs, ticket status, and communicating in any way that would be helpful to alleviate concerns.

It’s sad. Us paying customers are being punished because Keith needed that milestone payment..

That is just on the rollout of the new experience. The actual product they rolled out is complete garbage, even when this new UI is feature complete. Plex, inc has a corporate goal of further punishing us paying users with forced watchlist advertisements, even when trying to completely remove watchlist from our servers and clients.

This app is a look back on Sonos. Same crap and reasoning the CEO was canned. Plex made a huge mistake.

The new app sucks! The live tv lags, the app is ssslllooowww, takes forever to load, 0 customizations, too much Plex crap on it, etc…

The Plex team should’ve learned from their previous experience and Sonos. What a joke. Restore the old app as a classic version until this was in competing against the classic version.

unfortunately this is the way things are done these days, they release something thats still in alpha and say they will complete and fix it later

The new version is dog sh*t. Casting never worked on the beta experience. You have to side load an older version to keep casting. They seem to be having an issue with testing / QA. Just make sure you turn off auto update until they sort this mess out.

UPDATE
Further research found that the issue with not being able to find casting devices is adblockers blocking access to https://config.claspws.tv/. If you use piHole or similar check for that domain in your block logs. It worked for me on pfBlockerNG. Yay tracking!

Most likely the Google Play (arm64v8a) version is correct for modern devices.

The weirdest thing is having a 6 month long beta period for the new app, immediately getting all of the exact feedback they’re getting now, not materially updating the beta to resolve any of the feedback, then launching the app to the public, then putting out posts saying the app is only a week old give us some time. Truly bizarre and baffling attempt to mislead people reading.

yeah ive been seeing posts saying all these issues were present during the preview and none were fixed. its still in alpha. just look at the app size, previous app is like 160mb and this app is only 30mb. so much stuff is missing and what is there is broken

I have been one of the people who just use the mobile app casually. I don’t have any particular attachment to the old app and I was excited for the new look. The last time I posted on these forums was around 2 years ago.

I was really looking forward to trying this new UI, but it doesn’t work! I was so frustrated with navigation. Buttons take 1-2-3 clicks to work and sometimes don’t work at all. Buttons don’t have labels and you can’t hover over them. Everything is picture based but they take so long to load and lag the heck out. The old one was at least functional! Functionality isn’t even complete, as some things are missing. I can’t even access my music playlists or start watch together. what the heck happened here?

This is terrible. Hi, Jellyfin!

First, I’m all for modernizing GUIs, but everything is way too big for a mobile layout particularly on a phone. Overall, this was better keeping this experience for TV/console apps rather than the mobile. I’ll “trust” that the speed issues will hopefully get optimized.

Secondly, I think we would have hoped for more functionality, not less. We want Dash integration. We don’t want Downloads for series separated by episodes and done manually with ambiguous quality options. I still want Playlists that can be arranged, and that they are still separated from Libraries because it can share content from multiple Libraries.

There are plenty of “We’ve been asking for this for years now!” popular opinion threads that would have been far more valuable to spend time working on instead. I think I have inadvertently made a (duplicate) thread or so with some of these very requests.

As a lifetime Pass member, I don’t have a lot to get angry about since I’m not in a subscription plan, but I can see a lot of people are going to be upset and move on if it is not addressed very quickly.

I think they’re all morons.

This app is nowhere near ready to be released.

They completely removed all DVR functions which is the main reason I use the app, and the reason I just upgraded to a lifetime Plex Pass.

I’m paranoid what sort of fresh hell they’re going to release when they update the Apple TV app, obviously that’ll have a bigger impact on my DVR usage.

Yes, the DVR functionality was my main use for my Plex pass. On iOS, it is completely unusable now and I can’t return to the working Plex app. Please release “Plex Classic for iOS” so I can’t return to functional software. Are these forum posts falling on deaf ears? It feels like it.

just here to echo what everyone else is saying, why release an unfinished app. Give me back the old one for now at least
