Torrent Streaming

I was thinking lately about the possibility of a Plex app that would allow you to play videos while downloading them. Basically an app that would get a torrent file send it over to a torrenting client and get back a video stream once it’s buffered. Has anyone tried this? It wouldn’t be an easy task for sure but I’m pretty sure it’s doable. One cross-platform application that does simting similar is Tribler.

Afaik this is not possible with torrents as the torrent technology fetches packets more or less randomly from anywhere in the file. That means that it is quite possible it wont fetch the first second of a movie until the last moment of the download. So the buffering period would have to be the entire length of the movie. Usenet on the other hand is another matter.

Yes, I know that popular torrent clients fetch packets randomly but maybe a custom built client would make this possible. I’ll check for some open source projects.

I did a little more reading on the subject… It seems that this is technically possible but obviously you’ll get far more lower download speeds and some trackers might also ban you for this behavior.

It looks like it is easier when newsgroups are involved.

I know there are a few usable streaming nzb clients for windows. I am still looking for an osx one.

Check out the Newzworthy plugin http://newzworthy.info/

Holy crap! It's awesome. Thanks.

The alpha (or beta) of utorrent 3 has a torrent streaming as one of its headline features, so this seems so be achievable. Not sure how well this works though…

now that popcorn time had proved it possible, I think its time to revive this thread(and feature), no?
