I’ve been trying to get compilation albums working “correctly” by adjusting the “Various Artists” for album artist/folder structure. When the processing finishes even though the Artist is loaded correctly:
Earlier in my troubleshooting I was able to get it to work somewhat for a few of the tracks: the compilations would show up on the Artist page in Plexamp as “Appears on” which is what I’m hoping to have done for all of them.
My current folder structure for the Compilation example above is “Various Artists/2022 - Everything Bagel” and the Album Artist tag is “Various Artists” and the Album is “2022 - Everything Bagel”.
I also have all the scanner and agent settings set default except for “Prefer Local Metadata”
Does this mean I can make duplicate tracks of each artist in the correct artist - album/song format and then the “Appears on” will then show up on the newly created artist entries?
This seems very backwards but I could probably write a script to fix this.
Well you are said that artists get a page if they have tracks on their own albums. I can just generate a whole folder structure to give every artist their own album + track. Would that fix this?
Would be sad to give up on Plex for something as dumb as this, I spent like 3-4 hours trying to get this to work.
It might. But then you won’t get no or wrong matches with Musicbrainz.
And if you decide to build your own albums (by putting tracks from different source albums together), loudness computation won’t work correctly.
As I said, there is no good workaround.
I’ve just tested this in the small scale on a few folders and this 100% works. It doesn’t even need to be a valid albums, can just go in a self titled album folder. The reason why I have to do this is like 60% of my music is either singles or compilation tracks that don’t have albums so this forced workflow to put everything in an artist/album is the only way to get around the flaw.
Here’s an example of how it displays correctly now on an artist page:
I’m not very concerned with loudness computation, the musicbrainz matches still work though so this doesn’t seem like much of a loss given I have no other choice or a good chunk of my Artists won’t appear in Plex.
