Is it normal for a plex server for 2 users to have the plex transcode folder size to use more than 25gb of space? Is this also used by the DVR? If so, why would it if encoding of DVR media is disabled? I ask because the quantity doesn’t make sense given the use of the server.
Dive down into the folder and take a look at the sizes of the folders within.
Is the majority within Sessions or more within Sync?
If it’s the latter, you need to ask your users whether someone picked a large number of items (e.g a whole library) for mobile syncing or cloud syncing.
Everything is Sessions. All content is streaming. No sync at all.
Maybe it’s related but my buddy was streaming a show the other day and even after he stopped playback, plex (according to Status/Now Playing) was continuously looping the entire season for over a day as if his client was playing, but wasn’t. I was forced to restart Plex because the Stop Playback function didn’t respond. The Transcode folder now seems to be stable under 5gb. I really can’t say if they are endpoints of the same cord or not… Is it known how plex handles the transcode files? Are they held for a duration? Are orphan files deleted, due to improper closing of plex? I am waiting to hear back from him on the details of the client he was using. I’ll follow up as soon as I find out.
Ok, so it was a browser interface being used. The kicker is that he started Kodi while Plex was running, which “disconnected” the browser but apparently remained running in the background. So Plex kept running like a champ dumping into a blackhole. This might be a common thing to happen because I have had my transcode folder overload before.

These files should get purged upon the player session ending.

That in itself is remarkable because the two don’t have anything to do with each other and therefore should not interfere with each other like you described. This hints at a larger problem with the user’s machine.
If a Plex client is “kinda” running, so the server doesn’t notice it has been closed, then it will keep up its “session”. Simply because it thinks that the client is still in use.
Right at this very moment I look at the now playing list and I see 2 entries. One is my buddy, maybe normally watching, maybe not. The other is of an audio book in mp3 format I started listening to last night and stopped. Right now it is listed and unable to use the stop playback function. It was on my ipad using the plex app. It shouldn’t be there right now.
What version of Plex Server are you running and what OS is it running upon?
1.7.5.4035 on windows 7 pro
When did you notice this happening? Did this happen with a previous version of PMS?
This is new. I would say within the last 2 updates.
Can you grab your log files and post them here? Make sure debug logging is enabled and verbose is disabled. Server settings -> help, click download logs and post the zip file here. Maybe there’s something in there that will help shed light on what’s going on.
Also, Plex seems not to be deleting all the transcode files. I have some dated back 4 days old. Most are empty folders but not all.
Log file included.
