Transcoder seems to die and never recover

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5545
Player Version#: 4.75.0

I’ve been facing an issue when playing files that require audio transcoding on Plex Web App through the Chrome browser. I haven’t seen this behavior on any other browsers or clients, but it’s also hard to replicate since the behavior seems to randomly happen during playback.

Description of behavior: While playing a file that requires some type of audio transcoding in the Plex Web App in Google Chrome, at some point playback starts “buffering” (spinning circle), and never resumes. Even if I rewind 10 seconds, it will hit that same spot and start buffering again. It never recovers - I’ve left it for over an hour just to see if it ever does.

Description of my setup: Plex is installed via the native Docker manager in Unraid, using the PlexInc/pms-docker image. In Unraid I’m using Unassigned Devices plugin to mount the SMB share created on my Synology DS920+ that holds all of my media. I’ve created a share in Unraid at /mnt/user/transcode that is mapped to /transcode in the container. That share is public and configured to prefer the cache pool. I’ve verified that some files exist in this directory, so my assumption is that Plex has no issue writing to this directory (though I’m not an expert on file perms). In the Plex server settings I’ve configured the transocder temporary directory as /transcode (matching the container directory). Transcoder default throttle buffer is set to 60 seconds.

The file that I most recently had an issue with was an MKV file trying to transcode FLAC Stereo to AAC (video was H.264 direct stream). Screenshot of the file info below, and Plex logs attached (trimmed to remove verbose logs).

  • At 10:42:30, the playback began “buffering”

  • At 10:43:40, I hit the “10 seconds back” button and playback resumed from there.

  • At 10:43:50, the playback began “buffering” again and never recovered.

I’m more than willing to test out some scenarios. I’ve got a wide variety of files with different codecs along with different clients I can try. But I thought I’d at least get some guidance here first before aimlessly selecting from an infinite number of scenarios. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
