Transcoder segfault issues since late Feb/Early March Update

Some time around the February-March time frame, I had transcoder segfaults start while doing credits, intros, loudness, etc.during media scans… So bad that it would crash the entire OS of my server (Unraid). I tried following several posts by @ChuckPa on deleting codecs and such to fix it, nothing was working.

I was always told that it was “hardware issues” in discords and forums so i have swapped all the hardware out, and mixed hardware between 3 other systems. So in a last ditch effort I created a new Plex Docker using the unraid template for my pre-existing Plex (one that crashes). It has been scanning in all the media with loudness, credits, lyrics, intros, etc, all enabled.

Under the fresh install it is 100% stable, ZERO errors in syslog of unraid, ZERO crashes, ZERO plex errors. Its scanning the same media as before, but the HUGE issue is i lose all my metadata this way, alot of my music isnt matching right.

Is there anyway to just take the user metadata from the old install like custom entries and posters? or is there any ideas how to fix the old install/appdata? I feel like there must be parts of the transcoder that are broken and i couldnt get rid of deleting the codec folder and such.

Here is some of the error spam right before it crashes the OS kernel.
Again since I started a new container and scanning fresh. its had zero issues, but all my art, subs, etc are all unset and i would like to try and retain all that somehow.

Which OS/Platform and PMS version please?

Also , do you have logs for me? These messages alone don’t tell me what’s really wrong even thought I have an idea.

I will try to get logs, you need them all? specific ones? I have been using this metadata for a long time between 3 servers and its probably huge. Do I need to do anything to protect my account or privacy from anything in the logs? like tokens?

Yes please… Make a tar.gz or zip of the “Logs” directory (easiest) and drop it here

So looking in the Crash Reports folder, it was the “1.40.0.7998” when it started crashing constantly, In fact I have zero crash reports before that in any of the other folders.

Still trying to find out if there is some way to remove any sensitive info like login info or anything from logs before posting

I sadly do not have any of the backups that far back of the database, so i was not able to go backwards without starting over.

That’s fine. We’ll figure it out.

Before we go further, I got feedback from one of my other customers.

  1. Go into the container on the command line.
  2. ‘cd’ into /config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Codecs
  3. Delete the ‘linux’ codecs subdirectory and the files in it.
  4. You will see a .device_id file. Don’t delete this. It’s your license.
  5. Restart the container. PMS will download a fresh copy of the codecs.

I suggest this because a recent version of PMS had trouble updating codecs.
I don’t see the identical behavior but do see some things which don’t make sense and reloading codecs is painless.

Should I try to copy the the codecs from the known working copy of the docker? Its the same machine

So I ran your repair script, tried downloading codecs a couple times, then copied them from the working test docker, all issues have gone except credits scans still causing segfaults. so i have those off. not sure if there has been anything discovered on Plex’s end.

So, I figured there was no fix, since no responses in months. So I switched to Emby and Jellyfin, ZERO issues. You guys already have my money, so I just have to take the L for the unusable product. best of luck.

yes. was on 6.12.10 untill like a week ago or whever it came out. I reverted to plex version before last and it started working again, but the reliability is just not there for me. Seems every other Plex update i have codec issues or some other thing.
