Question about Transcoder temporary directory. I have 2 SSDs in my Qnap server. One is a 4 TB where all my media is stored. The 2nd is a 500GB and that is where the OS and other system files are.
Which am I better off using for the Transcoder temporary directory?
The faster one, with a faster interface, that has more free space, and is less busy, and is newer with a higher write durability, and that makes your transcoding go faster.
It would be easy to argue for either. Leave it at the default unless you have a compelling reason to change it or want to experiment.
Setting up a ramdisk is very simple and free. If you have 4-8GB of otherwise unused RAM then it is a tremendous speed improvement for your server. The main problem is that you need to allocate enough RAM to support your largest file. Most of my movies are “remuxes” meaning I basically just copied the entire blu-ray disc into a single file and most of them are 30GB or more. That’s a LOTTA RAM! Haha.
