Hi Plex Community,
I have an transcoding issue while playing mkv files.
The movie starts fine in atv and after a while it stops transcoding, the screen turns into green, the sound still works but just a green image. Btw all the movies are working fine on Plex iphone/ipad, Plex Home Theater and VLC but not on MplayerX(it starts 10seconds with a multicolor screen and then it close the programm)
I am on OSX 10.9.1, lastest version of PMS and PlexConnect
Cant figure out what i could be…
Any ideas?

I am also having transcoding issues with certain MKV's. I cannot seem to figure out the common ground as to how these videos are different. They work find with a plethora of different media players on my mac, but just don't stream to the AppleTV. Also, the same movies do not work with Beamer as well, something is up with this certain type.

The green screen sympton sounds like a PMS issue with remuxing.
PlexConnect uses the native iOS player on the ATV so I would post your PMS logs and media info in the PMS forum and see if they can see what the problem is there; you may not see the same issue on iOS mobile devices if your PMS is transcoding instead of remuxing (due to a lower bitrate threshold - impossible to know for sure from the info you have posted here).
jpotenza, these mkv files will be remuxed for playback on the aTV. All the files that fail for you have an absurd amount of reference frames, between 10-16, no file on this planet needs that many reference frames, if I remember correctly the Level 4.1 H.264 spec only allows 4 or 5 reference frames at 1080p. So there is probably no way the atv will play a file with that many 
Why people encode files with that many reference frames is beyond me as it’s not need and completely out of spec and only causes playback problems on lower powered devices.
If i go in plexweb to see the info from a movie but try to see the XML, it just shows up a blank page in safari nothing else.
So i cant put more information about my mkv in this topic;(
Or do you know how to fix the issue with XML?

you need to view the page source if you are viewing .xml in safari.

Or do you know of a way to that I can remux this quickly on my computer without the need to fully transcode, with no, to minimal loss in quality?

Yep, safari wont show you xml (not that it would give you any more info anyway) and the Media info that Plex provides is minimal at best. You need to run the files through a program like MediaInfo:- http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Remuxing won't change the number of referance frames. In PlexConnect settings you can try changing "Transcoder Action" to "Transcode" to force the files to be transcoded and see if that works.

This worked great! Thank you, not sure why I didn't try it sooner. Would be nice if I could keep Transcode on Auto and PlexConnect switched to Transcode with high ref-frame videos. Anyways, this will work for now, thanks again!
Umm… PMS has an iOS-AppleTV.xml Profile that determines the playback capabilities of the aTV. I wonder if an UpperBound for the number of reference frames could be added to force a transcode.

On Windows it goes in C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles
On Mac - Sorry don't use a mac so I don't really know. But at a guess just look in the location PMS is installed for a Resources\Profiles directory.
Back-up your original iOS-AppleTV.xml first and then copy in the replacement.
Not sure if PMS needs to be restarted but to be safe I would shut it down and restart it.
Now set the ATV back to AUTO transcode and see if the files now play ok.
In wich x.bundle did you find this ios-appletv.xml?
In Windows it's in the \Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles directory. As I said in my post on Mac I have no idea as I don't have a Mac, but I would guess it's in the same \Resources\Profiles directory. I have no idea what an x.bundle is, sorry, I'm a PC only guy :)
On mac I typically goto here to manage the hidden pms settings such as adding bundles etc:
~/library/application support/plex media server/
But I don't see a resources directory.

If you show package contents on the pms.app (in applications) by right clicking it there is a resources/profiles directory where the file in question is located at.
