I ran across 2 files that had 9 reference frames.  This was causing the transcoder to kick in (not a good thing on my Synology) so I edited the profile to change it from 8 to 9, and the files seem to play fine on my ATV3.  I'm not sure what the upper limit on what it supports, but it seem to be more than 8!


Actually the aTV only supports h.264 high profile level 4.0 which means it should only really support 4 reference frames at 1080p, but as you can see the aTV does in fact play files with a higher ref frame count. The problem is it also depends on a lot of other factors ie. bitrate and other encoder settings. So while one file with 9 ref frames might play fine another might not. If we set the ref frame count to high we end up with the same problem, files that just wont play and have no chance to be transcoded, and if we set it to low then files that don't need to be transcoded risk getting transcoded, which is a problem for people like you with low powered hardware. It's a difficult choice to make.

But not everybody wants the hassle of having to manually change the transcoder setting.

I think if the resolution is only 720p then more ref frames are supported. edit:- yep, aTV2 supports 5 ref frames at 720p and aTV3 supports 9 at 720p
 

I don't suppose the profile can list what we support for 720p vs 1080p does it?


Umm... not sure, I'll have to have a look at the xml profile again

Yep, currently only one profile, the aTV2 specs are even worse, Main@3.1 only supports 5 ref frames at 720p.

No, aTV will play AVC fine, AVC is just another name for h.264/mpeg4. I suspect there is something else wrong with the file, try remuxing it with a program like subler or iFlicks.

Remux doesn't work :(

Cant figure out what the issue of the mkv file is.

Just get green Screen on atv3.

In Vlc it works fine but in Mplayer X it is pixeled :(

Nobody knows a good software to reencode movie or something like this.. i don't wanna loose quality of the movie and sound.

any Ideas?

It's a High@L4.1 file, the ATV only supports High@L4.0.  Likely the bitrate is too high for it to handle.

Your one that doesn't play has a bitrate of 26.4mbit, these 2 are less than 5mbit.

Ok thanks;) could you please tell me whats the differences between those bitrates? And how can i reduce the bitrate of the mkv file? Without loosing quality:/ App?

Whats the best bitrate for full hd 1080p movies?
