Transcoding when it should be directly playing?

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 1.38 (11485)

Hi All,

I’m hoping somebody here might be able to help; this is driving me insane! I’m guessing the issue is a setting someplace on my end, but I have no idea what switch to toggle or what cable to jiggle…

When I try to play the Original Quality of file, the logs (attached) indicate that it is direct playing, but the file never actually plays.

If I change the quality to something else (1080p 20Mbps, for example) the file will play, but Tautalli indicates (as do the logs) that it is transcoding:
53%20pm

Any help how to fix this or insight as to why this is happening is appreciated.

For the record:

Please recreate and provide the log from the Apple TV. https://support.plex.tv/articles/212639598-apple-tv-logs/

Same issue I reported here but on my laptop browser

Cross-posting to another section (apple-tv) that doesn’t apply to your situation (desktop) and ignoring the instruction right above your post (post logs) does nothing to get this resolved for you…

On the contrary it helps the team debug it given that it’s the same symptoms, more information = better triaging
I’m facing the exact same symptoms with a Laptop browser and now I’m confirming that I’m also seeing the exact same symptom on my iOS phone as well (it’ll play 10Mbps 1080 but won’t play original quality which is much lower in bitrate). So this issue being replicated across multiple devices and platforms - it could point to an issue with the server rather than the client.

I’ll get the logs once I can access the server and post them

Different devices transcode for different reasons because they are capable of playing different formats directly.

Just because your setup (server hardware) is transcoding your file (which could be encoded differently) on your desktop hardware doesn’t mean another user with different server hardware, a different file, being played back on a different device that there’s a common issue. In fact it’s very unlikely.

There are a lot of moving parts in the Plex ecosystem and two environments are almost never identical which is why there are tags to help distinguish between them and why logs are so important.

Thanks for helping me look into this. I really appreciate it.

I’ve just recreated the problem using the file Fast & Furious (2009):

  • I tried playing the file at Original Quality. (Did not play as expected)
  • I tried playing the file at 20Mbps (Did play, transcoded according to Tautulli)
  • I tried playing the file at Original Quality again. (Did not play)

I have attached both the Plex Server Logs and the Apple TV Logs as .zip.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-02-20_17-19-29.zip (3.3 MB)
Apple TV logging.zip (377.1 KB)

Can you also post the media info for that Fast and Furious file? It’s the Get Info part you’ll see on the thumbnail for that movie

Thanks for the help.

I’m seeing all sorts of odd errors in your log. Not really sure what is going on. It’s basically saying it can’t find the file to direct play the movie. There’s also other file not found type of errors accessing other things from your PMS.

I wonder if it’s a permission issue and your SSL certificate got messed up. Try signing your server out then back in, then do the same on your Apple TV.

Thanks for looking into it. I’ve been away for the weekend so will try again this evening and post an update.

Okay @anon18523487 @5stringdeath, so here’s what I did:

  • Logged out of Plex for Apple TV and logged back in
  • Quit Plex Media Server and restarted
  • Restarted Synology NAS
  • Reconnected to the Video volume on my NAS through SMB (Finder/Go/Connect to Server)
  • Played the same Fast & Furious file, first in original quality (did not play) and then at 20Mbps (played but transcoded).
  • Generated and downloaded log files from Apple TV and PMS and attached them here

Anything else I should have done?

Cheers!

I’ll check your logs, but that’s not what I said to do. If there is an issue with the SSL certificate, quitting PMS does nothing. You need to sign out and back in, which will generate a new SSL certificate. Do the server first, then the Apple TV.

Also - which player are you using on the ATV, the old one or the new one? It’s a selection in the Plex preferences.

Also, depending on your TV, you may try to turn on “Match Content” in the ATV settings. However I would do it in this order:

  1. Logout as MovieFan suggested - try to play
  2. Try the new player in Plex settings (on ATV) - try to play
  3. Try turning on Match Content in ATV settings - ignore if #1 or #2 work
