We’ve released an update to the Plex preview channel - 6.0.16

This update will require you to sign back into Plex once, after install.

We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, updating our Roku app not only to a new UI similar to Plex Media Player, but also using Roku’s UI framework: Roku Scene Graph (RSG). That effectively means that the entire app has been rewritten!

This preview release certainly isn’t complete yet, but we want to get it in front of folks early, to help catch issues (particularly since it’s such a big rewrite). Not all features are currently supported, but it does offer some features that aren’t in the current app (like DVR scheduling). We’ll continue working on the preview and will release updates to it. This new UI/rewrite will eventually replace the current official Roku channel late this year or early next year.

We’re looking for feedback and reports about functional issues with the preview app/channel. Does a particular action cause a crash? Does clicking an action button not perform the action? Is something not rendered on the screen correctly? Etc., etc. While we’re certainly interested in feedback about UI/UX of our apps in general, this new preview app is intended to follow the same basic UI design as the existing Plex Media Player (TV layout) app.

If the channel doesn’t appear after adding on Roku’s website, you can force a update via Roku’s device menu: Settings -> System -> System update

Below is a non-exhaustive list of what’s supported, and things to do.

Some of what’s already supported:

  • Requires PMS v1.13.5.5291 or newer for server/library compatibility
  • Requires Roku firmware version 8.1
  • Full PMS library playback: movies, shows, videos, music, photos, and live TV
  • Record TV from the Roku app
  • Customizing home page hubs and ordering type sources.
  • Control channel and playback from another Plex application.
  • Search
  • Podcasts
  • Web Shows
  • News
  • Folder view

Some of the things we still need to do:

  • Localization
  • Live TV channel grid view
  • Photo timeline view
  • Fix feedback and issues
  • Automatic lock screen (switch users will lock the screen if PIN protected)
  • Theme music
  • Screensaver options

note: This channel will replace the Plex Pass Preview channel. The preview channel is available to everyone.
