We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, updating our Roku app not only to a new UI similar to Plex Media Player, but also using Roku’s UI framework: Roku Scene Graph (RSG). That effectively means that the entire app has been rewritten!
This beta release certainly isn’t complete yet, but we want to get it in front of folks early, to help catch issues (particularly since it’s such a big rewrite). Not all features are currently supported, but it does offer some features that aren’t in the current app (like DVR scheduling). We’ll continue working on the beta and will release updates to it. This new UI/rewrite will eventually replace the current official Roku channel late this year or early next year.
We’re looking for feedback and reports about functional issues with the beta app/channel. Does a particular action cause a crash? Does clicking an action button not perform the action? Is something not rendered on the screen correctly? Etc., etc. While we’re certainly interested in feedback about UI/UX of our apps in general, this new beta app is intended to follow the same basic UI design as the existing Plex Media Player (TV layout) app.

Is it possible to have the UI go back to the Old Plex interface as the new UI is shockingly bad to navigate and looks awful,
The current UI on Roku, Version 5.3.9 its outstandingly great to use, it looks nice and its unfussy, one particle thing i like about version 5 is when i pick my server and not my friends, i only see my content, the New UI i still see everyone elses, i am currently investigating ways to block api.roku.com so my roku will not update to the new UI automatically in the future, personally Plex is about ease of use to find the content i want, then i watch or listen to it. the Plex media Player app looks fantastic and similar to my plex, when i go in to TV mode its just “crap” with out being rude, the UI is just awful to look at an use…sorry to be blunt the current UI for Roku is excellent and please don’t force to change for everyone.
Really enjoying the roku beta player. I haven’t run into any major bugs yet, just a few things missing that I would like to see added.
Backgrounds for media items and shown while media is loading.
On the post play screen when the next episode of a show is counting down, please show the description of the episode while the 15 second countdown is going.
I couldn’t see a spot to change servers but I probably just missed it.
Omg plex please dont ruin the roku like you have the xbox, its been a year and its still missing basic features that were in the previous version, like FF and REW.
This latest version of the beta works considerably better for me than the previous one. I get the very occasional crash out to the roku menu when watching live tv. Otherwise it’s been solid.
I’ve been trying to look around on here, so if this has already been answered I apologize…but are you guys not going to have a plugins/channels menu in the new Roku player ?
Plugins are being discontinued for all new Roku apps and will stop working in the future for all apps so there is no plans to include them in the new Roku app.
@Elijah_Baley I know they said they were discontinuing plugins in a recent blog post, but they said there would still be a way to manually install / access bundles for those that still use them in that same post. Is this not going to be the case ?
You can install them for the server manually, but the client apps have to support it and the new Beta roku will not work with plugins ever. The existing non beta app will work until they force out the beta as the new client.
