That setting is in the app, not on PMS.

I’ll turn on the network logging on my Apple TV as well as the Audio Quality feature so someone can check it…

not sure if anyone asked this question already:
if I have several optimized versions in my server,
will this auto quality feature switching between these versions when automatically adjusting qulity?
or it will only change the transcoding parameters of the version that the video playback started with?

It doesn’t switch from an optimized version to the original.

how about between optimized versions?

No. This feature still uses the same source file, it just changes the destination.
So I’m somewhat new to plex and am loving this feature. How long typically do features stay in a Preview Only mode? My kids love using plex at their moms to pickup where they left off watching a show at my house. This feature would help quite a bit when their WIFI is subpar. I know that know one knows the exact date but is it typically a couple of months, a year, etc.
Thanks!

Varies a lot… but it’s usually long.
What sucks is that the only player I stream outside of my network is the Plex Media Player. Could really use this feature too. Been wanting it for a long while.

We don’t always live in a world with consistent home Wi-Fi or Internet speeds. To give you the best possible experience, Plex can now automatically adjust the quality of your video based on your connection speed.
Uh most routers have this feature already its called QoS… and it’s built in, why is this APP trying to “adjust” the quality when it should focus on getting the video… If this has been “adjusted” it’s because Plex developers expect 100% ownership of the data stream… and that’s a problem you can’t expect complete control over data… when quality drops it’s the router job (not the app) to make sure the other devices are getting what they need, if Plex is needed to make this change it’s because the original development is wrong…
Netflix does it but that’s because they modify the stream for the device resolution…not for quality purposes… HD maybe needs to be reduced because not enough bandwidth but If you have trouble getting video reliably you need a better router… that’s the job and primary function of that device… Plex should not do this and I doubt this works as well as it sounds.
Software can’t do this as well as hardware and again Netflix has worked with hardware vendors to ensure the hardware meets Netflix standards… hence the reason Netflix didn’t work with HD signal if it wasn’t on pre-installed hardware such as HD TV

Maybe the cellular signal varies during the bus ride into work, or your Wi-Fi slows down every time your roommate microwaves a burrito. When your connection quality changes, it’s annoying for video players to pause or require you to change a quality setting. In cases like that, it’s ideal to automatically adapt without interruptions. To give you the best possible experience, Plex can now automatically adjust the quality of your video based on your connection speed. When auto quality is turned on, videos will start at the quality that you have selected in your app’s quality settings, then increase or decrease quality based on your connection speed.
Gregflix, this feature is awesome and is now the top feature of PlexPass for me. I will say that I am looking forward to it working in the web client and PMP, simply because I use my work laptop (Windows) to watch Plex while I am on business trips (giant 15" screen has to be good for something)…
It kept up perfectly with the free wifi at San Fran airport which is in my experience, one of the most overload free airport wifis. it has worked great in some hotels with less than stellar wifi and I just tried it on the satellite internet on a long flight (but I suspect this flights internet is a bit better than average for some reason since im doing 4Mbps without it doing much adjusting).
This feature is fantastic ,keep up the great work!

Your router based QoS cant work magic on the data itself. It prioritizes traffic going out, thats it. It helps if youre uploading a large file and streaming Plex to someone at the same time by prioritizing the traffic you want it to (Plex) or by prioritizing specific types of traffic like ACKs during downloads, but if you are on a connection that is subpar like a busy hotel your router QoS can’t magically make a 20Mbps Plex stream go down a crappy destination connection that can only handle 3Mbps. The app HAS to account for that by changing the amount of data it is trying to get
If a server side router with QoS could make Plex traffic go down a crappy connection then we wouldnt all be upgrading connections to stream a couple 4K streams or get big Steam games faster. At some point you can only fit X traffic in Y pipe and if X exceeds Y the best hardware QoS wont do what you think its going to do.

QoS decided which traffic gets prioritized between different apps and services… But if the pipe just isn’t big enough, plex.needs to transcode down.
And yes, Netflix does lower quality, the only difference is they have pre-transcoded files where we have to transcode on the fly.
Does this downgrade the quality at the preference of US Cell Providers like Verizon, T-Mo, ATT? Like how they have all now assumed the right to forceably throttle HD video down to 480p???
After the recent updates (unsure if Client or Server end), Auto adjust is completely broken, and doesn’t work at all.
Can someone please confirm if they are able to see Auto Adjust occur on the fly when required? I can no longer see any attempt made to auto adjust streams anymore.
Here is my current scenario.
Client/Servers
Client 1 = iOS version 4.16.1
Client 2 = Android version 6.4.1.1644
Server = Ubuntu version 1.8.1.4139
Settings
Clients (These have been set to remove any chance of Direct Play occuring, so Auto Adjust should always work)
Auto Adjust ON
Internet Streaming Maximum Quality, Play Smaller Videos OFF
Home Streaming Maximum Quality, Use Recommended Settings OFF
Server Settings
No limitation placed on streaming quality or upload bandwidth
Internet Availability
Speedtest conducted between server and client : 5mbps from Server to Client.
Scenario
Step 1: Client 1 plays 720p file 4mbps. Plex streams at 720p transcode. Plays OK
Step 2: Client 2 then plays 720p file 4mbps. Plex streams at 720p transcode. Buffers
Client 1 then buffers. Plex remains attempting to stream at 720p transcode on both clients while both streams completely pause.
No attempt is made to reduce quality on either client.
Is someone able to replicate this issue on their end?

You’ll need to provide logs from PMS and your clients to see what is going on. Note that the ABR only kicks in if there issue is transmission speed. If the problem is the transcoder or the client or even the video itself, ABR does not apply. The clients measure the speed that the stream is being transferred at. This info is in the client logs.
Sure, here are the logs.
Attempted to play 127 Hours just before I grabbed these logs. 1080P 15mbps stream buffered on a 5mbps internet connection. Automatically Adjust turned on, all settings adjusted to disable direct play.
Playback buffers immediately- no attempt to adjust quality or resolution.
I believe this may be a server issue- before I updated to the latest PMS on Ubuntu, I didn’t have these issues.

@FlixNow - doesn’t this feature depend on the upload speed being set? For some reason I thought it that was not set it would not work. I certainly could be wrong - I don’t use the feature myself.
