TV Extras naming

Server Version#: 4.142.2

I’m trying to figure out why Plex is ignoring some of the extras I have for TV shows.
The Library type is TV shows, the scanner is Plex TV Series, the Agent: Plex Series.

The 2 test episodes themselves and the series are recognised.

I’ve tried various file naming as below, but the extra never appears either at the Season level, or if I include S01E01 at the beginning of the file.

I’ve tried referencing from the guide, but I’ve not found the magic combination of naming yet to make it work. Can anyone else spot what I have wrong ?

[adrian@homenas1 House of the Dragon]$ find …/House\ of\ the\ Dragon/
…/House of the Dragon/
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/House of the Dragon - S01E01 - The Heirs of the Dragon.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/House of the Dragon - S01E02 - The Rogue Prince.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/Behind The Scenes
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/Behind The Scenes/thisissometext-behindthescenes.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Specials
…/House of the Dragon/Season 03
…/House of the Dragon/Season 02

I’ve also tried moving the folder up a level as below

[adrian@homenas1 House of the Dragon]$ find …/House\ of\ the\ Dragon/
…/House of the Dragon/
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/House of the Dragon - S01E01 - The Heirs of the Dragon.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Season 01/House of the Dragon - S01E02 - The Rogue Prince.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Specials
…/House of the Dragon/Season 03
…/House of the Dragon/Behind The Scenes
…/House of the Dragon/Behind The Scenes/thisissometext-behindthescenes.mkv
…/House of the Dragon/Season 02

Looking around on the forums I see other people posting on this back in 2021. But the article seems to call out that it should work with this as the example:

/Game of Thrones
   An Interview With Emilia Clarke-interview.mkv
   /Trailers
      Trailer 1.mkv
      Trailer 2.mkv
   /Featurettes
      Special Effects.mkv
   /Season 01
      /Behind The Scenes
         A look at season 1.mkv
         Season 1 Deleted Scenes-deleted.mkv

So… having the “Behind The Scenes” under the “Season 01” folder should work… but doesn’t appear to.

Note: Certain clients do not yet fully support TV extras

Season-level extras in particular.
Did you look at it with the web app? That’s among those client types, which don’t show season-level extras yet.

Yes this is directly using app.plex.tv

That is the web app.

Ah okay… I understand now, thanks Otto very much. Seems odd to me that the mobile apps have functionality that Plex’s own web interface doesn’t. I just checked on iOS and I can see it there.

Do you know if there’s any timeline for when that type of feature becomes available in the web app?

Sorry, I’m not able to say.

Would it work differently if the server was Windows vs Linux ?
My test setup is Windows based, and it seems to work there (iOS client).
But the same iOS Client on the QNAP install doesn’t seem to work.

No, that doesn’t make a difference.

Then there is something different on the QNAP.
Possible causes include:

  • item hasn’t got a “Refresh Metadata” yet
  • subfolders with those extras don’t have sufficient access permissions applied
  • library is still using a legacy metadata agent (tv show extras only work with the modern agent)
  • server software version is too old

Thanks again. It looks like I had to run a manual Refresh Metadata on the library for it to get picked up. Now I understand the mechanics a little, I just have to go back through all my collection to move files around and rename them ! Oh well thats the xmas week break sorted out

Tip: Filebot can take most of those duties on a whole tv show’s worth of files.
