I am unable to get PMS to match the Killing using TVDB although an entry exists there. Anyone else had the same problem?
Yeah, just manually match it to "The Killing 2011 2011" IIRC.

A sample of exactly how you are naming "The Killing" episodes would be helpful.
Does "The Killing (2011)" > "The Killing (2011) - s01e01 - Pilot.ext" not work?
The Killing - S01E01 - Pilot .mp4
The individual episodes should not contain the year.
The TV Show portion of the file name should match the folder naming. So if the TVDB entry includes a year in the TV Show name then the file should include it as well. If the TVDB entry doesn't include a year in the show name then it shouldn't be included in the folder or file.
C:\TVShows\The Killing (2011)\Season 1\The Killing (2011) - s01e01 - Pilot.mp4
This would be the correct absolute naming if your library was in C:\TVShows and it was a mp4.
edit: Fixed the full path. I left the Season out of the path in my original post.
According to the Plex Media Naming & Organization Guide (http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Media_Naming_and_Organization_Guide#TV_Shows), the year is never used in the naming of TV episodes. Seems pretty clear to me.
All saved in one folder, never had a problem with another series. I suspect it might be to do with the fact there is a Dutch series (2007) and the US series (2011). I expected it not to work automatically however using manual search for 'The Killing' '2011' should have yielded a result.
There is no year in the filenames but this should have any bearing on a manual search?
Update: Just tried adding the year to the folder containing the series. Plex picked it up automatically.
The Killing (2011) .mp4
The folder itself should be named as above.

Yes according the Plex Media Naming Guide you include the year if the year is included in TVDB. If the show name on TVDB has a year in it then that is the show name no matter where it is used in your file system. For example, Doctor Who (2005) as scraped from TVDB IS NOT Doctor Who. It's Doctor Who (2005). Then when taking the official naming convention ShowName - sXXeYY.ext the ShowName is Doctor Who (2005) not Doctor Who. By making the folder Doctor Who (2005) and the file just Doctor Who, you're specifying two completely different shows within one file structure and you're going to end up with scraping issues.
All I can say, is for me to match this particular series (I know what the naming convention guide says), as itznfb indicated you have to match the year in the series title for TheTVDB to find the match. You dont have to name the files that way, but you have to match it that way.

You could very well run into issues without naming the files. In most cases it may be OK as long as the directory structure is setup correctly. Where I see the most issues is when you have both years of a show. That's why I used Doctor Who as an example. With both Doctor Who and Doctor Who (2005) on the same server I ran into tons of scraping mismatches without naming the files Doctor Who for the original series and Doctor Who (2005) for the new series.
This is working for me:
Top Folder : "The Killing"
"Season 01"
"The Killing.S01E01..
"The Killing.S01E02..
"Season 02"
"The Killing.S02E01..
And so on

You don't need to do that! Just use the year option at the top folder level.
Top Folder : "The Killing (2004)"
sub folder "Season 1"
".S01E01..
".S01E02..
sub folder "Season 2"
".S02E01.
works here.

I like that all my files at least have part of the name in them, when moved around etc....
That way, I don't end up with multiple .S01E01.mkv files :)
