Unable to direct play hevc with latest Chromecast

Any update here? I had a Chromecast Ultra and would play HVEC just fine, now I upgraded to the new Google TV chromecast with the remote and can only play 264 now. Is there something I need to do here?

Sorry, I never got back to you on this. The new device reports that it supports DTS, but from our testing and other user reports, it really doesn’t, so the playback fails. We’ve disabled using DTS and passthrough on the device to avoid this issue until Google can add a fix. Make sure you are running the latest 8.10.0 public or latest beta.

If this is related to DTS audio, see my comment above. If not, then you’ll need to provide logs from the app after reproducing the issue.

Thanks for the response. I agree the new device doesn’t seem to handle DTS at all. The latest Plex client seems to work well by changing to 5.1 dolby automatically in these situations.

Ok I tried to get it to stream HVEC on a few different platforms by streaming schitt’s creek s6e01 on a few different platforms, but the one I’m most interested is is the android TV one.

I can see someone is doing it with an apple tv though, and I know it used to work with my ultra, just don’t feel like plugging it back in. I can do that if need be though. I also tried to change the audio source and there weren’t any other options.

Looks like you’ve set your subtitle settings in the app to always burn in.

And that’s an issue??

burn subtitle = video transcode

That’s what burning subtitles means.

The more you know. Thank you very much. I hadn’t realized that.

This part is mostly true if the text based subtitles do not include any type of formatting. Some basic ones like bold and italic may be supported, but anything beyond that will result in either PMS converting the text to plain test without formatting so it can be displayed or have to be burned in as well to show the formatting.

I’m having the same issue.
Some 4K HEVC with EAC3 content works fine with
video=HEVC copy
audio = EAC3 - AAC

Other content like 4K HEVC HDR with EAC3 doesn’t and doesn’t even start
video = Transcode 4K HEVC (HW) to 4K H264 (HW)
audio = EAC3 - AAC or EAC3 - null
