UnRaid server disks keep spinning up, caused by Plex, but WHY?

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457
Player Version#: web player,

So I have a small unraid server which I access once or twice a day. Because of this it is idle a LOT so I would like the drives to spin down when not in use.

I’ve been trying to get this sorted and it works mostly only that exactly every 6 hours after drive1 spins down, exactly the same files are read again by Plex. If I stop PMS this doesn’t happen.
Note that the PMS program is installed on an SSD, that canbe accessed all the time, only content is stored on disk1, no any other program settings.

I installed the UnRAID file activity plugin and its showing this:

Mar 25 04:53:00 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/Hurt Locker, The (2008)/The Hurt Locker 2008 Remux-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 04:53:01 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/The Other Guys (2010)/The Other Guys 2010 Remux-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 04:53:02 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/The Family (2013)/The Family 2013 Bluray-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 04:53:02 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/Frozen (2013)/Frozen 2013 Bluray-1080p.mkv

Mar 25 10:53:04 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/Hurt Locker, The (2008)/The Hurt Locker 2008 Remux-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 10:53:04 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/The Other Guys (2010)/The Other Guys 2010 Remux-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 10:53:04 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/The Family (2013)/The Family 2013 Bluray-1080p.mkv
Mar 25 10:53:05 OPEN => /mnt/disk1/Data/Movies/Frozen (2013)/Frozen 2013 Bluray-1080p.mkv

Notice the 6 hours between each last and first read.

The files were all added in the last week or two. Im guessing plex is accessing these files because they are new. However, the strange thing is that other files were added that are not showing up…

I turned on logging in Plex but couldn’t find this activity in the log file for some weird resons and in the console I’m not seeing it either.

I turned off all the scan options under library settings in plex but this didn’t make a difference. Also turned off most settings in the scheduled tasks settings (couple which are ‘every 3 days’ are still on). I thought that plex could be looking for meta data but I checked all the files, the metadata downloaded successfully. No additional agents are setup so that can’t be it.

Anybody have any idea what the reason is for this activity?? Thanks for the help!

Does it scan the library every 6 hours or some similar regular action?

Scan library has been turned off, it is only scanning those 4 files and i have lot more so I don’t know why it’s only looking at those. Location of all other files is similar…

Scan my library automatically = off
Scan my library periodically = off

You could have a looking into PMS log file to see what it is doing with the files.

I trie dthat but there are so many different log files… no idea what to look for.

I sorted then by date and picked the latest 2 files
“plex media server.log”
“com.plexapp.system.log”

tried searching these both for the files being accessed but they don’t show up in the log.
how am I going to find them?

This is the right one. Try searching for the title, should be there if Plex is doing something with it. Check if debug log is selected in server settings.

Server > Settings > General
Enable Plex Media Server debug logging = turned on

But when I search the plex media server.log file none of the 4 titles come up, which would suggest Plex isn’t doing anything with them.
However, If I stop plex media server the files aren’t accessed anymore, so it must be plex opening them every 6 hours… :confused:
