Hi everyone,
One question has always bothered me: Is it possible to automatically use an optimized version whenever I select a different quality setting?
My Plex Server runs on my little Pi3 in the basement and has very limited performance but decent bandwidth. That’s all fine if I direct play, but if I accidentally forgot to set the quality to direct play, it tries transcoding FHD videos, or even worse, 4K footage. When that happens, the Pi gets too busy to even respond to SSH (not to speak of remote desktop). But I got a rather good machine on my desk that can just grab the files from the server and transcode it with HandBrake in minutes, which is then sent back. I then rename the file to something like “(file)-[480p].mkv” to manually merge it in Plex. When I ask Plex it tells me the correct bitrate and resolution and everything seems to be just fine and even plays correctly (sorry av1, took a while to figure that one out) when selecting the other version. If I change the quality in the menu, it immediately starts transcoding and stops responding
Now I don’t always want to select a different version when leaving my home’s WiFi, so the question is: Is it possible to tell Plex to look for the pre-transcoded version first before killing my Pi?
Help is much appreciated
