This feature gets my vote.

This would be a fantastic feature for me. I have been searching the internet trying to figure out what is wrong with my system because it keeps buffering. I share my server and hate when people tell me they cant watch something because it keeps buffering. This would take care of all of that.

People need years of training before one can master the skill of +1 the OP.. Please don't be so hard on the young grasshoppers OrionShock.
I did both. Not Just post a +1.
My apologies if my enthusiasm got the best of me.

One other thing that would be nice would be a fast video quality switcher, again, à là Youtube:

Sometimes, I just need to switch from 4Mbps to 3Mbps to keep a video from buffering too often, and it's a pain to have to go all the way to Settings to do this.
I went through a couple pages of feature requests and didn't find anything similar, maybe I'll open a new one.

This already exists on the web player.

I was a bit puzzlled for a moment there, but I just opened Plex/Web and saw that it has a completely new interface. Very cool.
I think that feature would also help out users who have low end servers.
It seems like both Amazon Fire TV and IOS Plex app do that since they are using the devices default players. - Dev, please correct me if I am wrong.
With Amazon FireTV, I have the girlfriend pause the videos for 1 - 2 minutes before watching. It's been three days and that seems to have fixed the constant buffering. Keep in mind that she lives in another state. I also noticed that my PMS CPU drops from 99% to 40% for the remaining of the movie after resuming the video.
So this thread was started in 2012 and it's 2014 ... this is probably the biggest feature i've been waiting for, i could care less about plugins and play queues not that they aren't cool but so sad it doesn't get more attention!
This would a very cool way to play media through Plex… +1!
No way, I though this was already the case...!
For sure a +1
I've always wondered if GIFs were allowed here.

I think that's the most important thing right now. For some users the amazing MyPlex ISN'T usable beacause this isn't available.
This is very important
iOS clients already do this somewhat, possibly due to the way Apple implements their video player and HTTP live streaming.
This request would be just for the Mac client, and perhaps the other desktop clients as well. We like to watch things on the big screen!
I would however love to hear from a developer about how hard it'd be to implement!
Not all of them. I don't think this happens on PlexConnect.

I'm not sure it happens anymore. This is just anecdotal: but a year or two ago the Plex iOS app used the standard progress bar (that you see in the Youtube app, for example), and if you paused your stream, it would slowly start to fill up ahead. The current app doesn't use that anymore, so if it is caching in the background, we can't see it.
I really wish we had some input from the developers here.
My intuition is that it would be enough to grab the buffer that holds incoming video frames, store it in the local disk instead of in memory (because you could be holding a lot of data), and removing the limits on that buffer -- letting it fill up with as much data as was available.
I wish we lived in a world where everyone has plenty of upload bandwidths (and ISP that doesn't suck) that we wouldn't need a thread like this :(
