Hey all, I’m a huge fan of plex been running it for years, recently I have setup a All in one touch PC for my kid I’m running plex media(1.15.4.993) on it. It’s a Lenovo AIO the spec is Intel Pentium CPU J2900@2.41ghz, 4GB 4am, 64bit windows 10 Pro.
VLC player plays the 720p movies perfectly but when I play it through plex it is sluggishly as hell.
I thought because “plex can run on a Raspberry Pi” which has no horsepower this CPU would be able to run plex videos smoothly. Guess I will have to teach the kids how to navigate /browse folders and use VLC
Are you going to be installing the movies for them? If so then transcode the movies before putting them on their machine, some people like handbrake for this, l like xmedia recode. Optimize for their mobile devices that way Plex will not have to do on the fly transcoding. The Plex server can also optimize any movies you put on it,but depending on how strong a CPU, it may take a while to do. May be a good way to teach kids patience, have them do it.
There is no one size fits all. There are hundreds of aspects to a file besides it’s format like MKV or MP4. The type of streams inside the file and the unique aspects those streams may have been made at.
Our HTPC player app “Plex Media Player” that @OttoKerner mentioned can generally play back the most types of files without needing the server to transcode.
How old are your kids? Old enough for you to start teaching them to do things on their own? In their computer, in Plex server, when you put your mouse over a movie, on the lower right corner you will see three dots. When you click on it, a menu pops up with things they can do. One is called optimize, this will transcode the file to mp4 and make sure that their Android devices can play it with out trying to do (on the fly transcoding that takes a powerful CPU). It may take a hour or two to transcode the file, but after that you should have no more sticking or buffering. You see if I understand correctly, the Android Plex app understands only mp4 right now, also the video has to be coded as 264, and the audio is AAC stereo.
So you can do this yourself, or teach the kids to do it themselves. Keep backups as they will mess up, being kids. Also there is delete in that popup menu, that will remove the movie from the hard disk.
