Volume levelling doesn't work for all tracks

The volume levelling feature doesn’t seem to work for all tracks. For tracks that it doesn’t work on, the waveform preview doesn’t appear, the progress bar is just a normal line. This makes Plexamp basically unusable since the unlevelled tracks just play incredibly loudly.

I’ve tried deleting and recreating the library, which has only made things worse as it now appears that volume levelling doesn’t work for any tracks at all.

I recently moved this server to another machine, the volume levelling appeared to work as expected on the original, so I don’t think the files are the problem.

Maybe the server just hasn’t analysed the tracks yet? The files do have ReplayGain tags, but does Plex actually use those? The “Analyse” function doesn’t seem to have any effect.

Of course. By doing that, you have thrown away the results of the previous analysis.

No, it does its own analysis, which not only determines the loudness of the overall file (like ReplayGain does) but takes loudness “samples” 10 times a second. This is used to build the soundprint and is needed for Sweet Fades.

Make sure the analysis is enabled under
Settings - Server - Library

You also need to make sure that the server is actually running during the scheduled maintenance period (and that the storage medium where your music is located is powered on and accessible).

Most likely. Depending on the size of your collection, it may take up to several days to analyse them all.

Maybe the affected tracks were not located on your server?
If you play a “Radio”, tracks from shared servers and from Tidal (if subscribed) are incorporated as well.

Tidal albums get analysed as a background job in the cloud, as soon as a Plex user is playing an album. Which means that you may only get loudness data upon the second or third playback.

My library isn’t particularly big, only ~2800 songs, so I’m not sure why it hadn’t analysed all the tracks, it’s been on 24/7 for several days.

Anyway, I changed the analysis setting so it analyses upon adding tracks, then recreated the library again. Judging by the significant CPU usage, it seems to now be analysing the tracks. Thanks for the help.

I discovered today that I have this same problem. A batch of several albums I added are not playing back with volume leveling and the waveform preview is missing. Also, 320k MP3s are showing that they are 326 or 328k… random numbers in the 320-329 range.
I tried removing some tracks that previously had volume leveling information and adding them back as well and they were no longer playing back with volume leveling.
I changed the volume analysis setting to run when track were added as well as a scheduled task. No change.
I used to be able to add music and play back with volume leveling minutes later. Plex hasn’t updated recently so I don’t know what broke. Ubuntu updated yesterday so maybe it’s an OS issue?

Update it seems Plex got its volume info overnight, cause everything is playing back leveled now. I even added an album and played it 2 minutes after adding and it worked.
