Volume Levelling for Movies (R128)

Is there anyway of getting Plex to analyse volumes of movies like it does for music? Jriver can report R128 of multi channel movies. Would love to get this in Plex. Or worst case is there a way to get the Plex server to read sidecar.xml files that have the R128 metadata there?

That’s an interesting feature suggestion, and you might consider moving this post to Feature Suggestions.

I don’t think so.

Plex performs its own ReplayGain 2 / EBU R128 analysis for music volume, ignoring any embedded RG1/RG2 tags. I think only the PlexAmp player uses it for playback, but I’m sure somebody will correct me.

I assume you’d like to normalize playback volume of movies?

The ideal playback for most audio is a direct stream and decoding in the player hardware. I’m not sure if players would allow for gain adjustment while preserving that playback path, or if it would imply downmixing/transcoding the audio.

There’s always this if you want to modify your files:

Thanks for the response. I’ve added it to feature requests.

Ideally Plex could then use the information to trim or boost volume of a movie but for when using pass through I’d just like to know the value so I know what to set my AVR to.

The mixes now days are so inconsistent when it comes to volume. I did some analysis on things like Age of Ultron and the Atmos track was 11db lower than comparible movies like Kong. Currently I just look up on Jriver’s interface what it reports the R128 value as and set the volume nobb on my AVR accordingly. When you’re after a real theater experience I feel it’s important - I don’t like second guessing what the volume should be by waiting for dialogue to come on or risk hearing issues by playing too loud
