The new Discover and Watchlist features are fantastic additions.
The way Discover allows new content to be explored within a wide range of streaming services, including content that is coming soon, elevates Plex into competition with other streaming aggregation services like GoogleTV, making it a viable universal interface to all streaming content experiences.
With Watchlist, the results of this exploration can be stored so that selected content can be experienced at a later date. This makes time spent on search and discovery well worth it, especially since content that is not yet released can be added to the watchlist to be enjoyed once it is available.
One way to enhance the ability to search for content and store selections in the watchlist would be to support Add to Watchlist within the Multi-Select function in LIbrary View. Currently, in the Windows client for example by hovering the pointer over an item in Library View and selecting the circle in the top left corner of the poster, a selection of multiple items is created.
Additional actions are then supported when multiple items are selected, including Edit, Add To…, Mark as Played or Unplayed, Analyze, Merge, Delete and More. Within Add To…, this allows multiple items to be selected and then added to Collections or Playlists.
It would make sense to add Watchlist to the this function, so that the power of Multi-Select is combined with the value of the Watchlist.
Also, it would be great if a Watchlist flag could be added to the Advanced Filters in the Library View as well. Currently, flags such as Unplayed, In Progress, Unmatched and Duplicate are very useful ways to filter the library in combination with other filters such as Genre or Director, in order to focus on particular items of interest. Being able to filter like this within the list of items that have been added to the Watchlist would be great!
(Emphasis added)
That would be a great option. The current implementation of the watchlist does not delete results from your watchlist if you watch them. Being able to set a filter to populate the watchlist via “unplayed” would dynamically reduce the watchlist when you end up watching a movie. Great idea.
Yes, that sounds like an excellent way to use the advanced filter!
I was thinking that, once the Watchlist is quite large and comprises items from many sources, it might be nice to be able to filter the Watchlist using an Advanced Filter where you set Watchlist = TRUE AND Genre = Science Fiction, or Watchlist = TRUE AND Director = Denis Villeneuve as examples. That way you can review items in a large Watchlist according to a more refined focus of interest.
But, what you suggest, being able to filter by Unplayed items and then add all Unplayed items to the Watchlist using Advanced Filter and adding an Add to Watchlist option in the Save As… drop down button (where you can now Add to Collection…, Save as Smart Collection…, Add to Playlist…, etc.) is also an excellent idea!
