What GPU Should I Add?

My current Plex build is an HP DL380 G5 with 64GB of RAM, 2 quad core Xeon processors and the DB running on an SSD. I’ve gotten away with 8 concurrent transcodes, but I know my CPUs were pegged at that point. Is there a GPU that I could add to the server that would lighten this load and also set me up to stream more 4k content?

Depends on what OS you use.

Keep in mind, consumer Nvidia GPUs are limited to 2 concurrent streams even if they could do more. AMD works well, no limits on number of streams.

At this point in Plex, especially regardind the OS issue, it is probably a better move to move to a more recent, even if underpowered, intel CPU that has a recent GPU on it. Something like an i5-9400 would do wonders with GPU acceleration. my i5-7500 is more than sufficient for me, can deal with everything I’ve thrown at it.

Currently I am running the server on Windows Server 2012 R2

1660 with nvidia hack.

Windows can use AMD, Nvidia, and Intel acceleration. Unsure about the specifics of Windows Server 2012 though, I’ve never used it.

I recommend getting a mid-range, recent AMD card like a rx570, will cost you about 150US$ (probably less) and you’ll get amazing performance, no hack required.

Best Gpu for transcoding is p4000 (for the price)
