hello, I would like to buy the best Nas device that has a high CPU and transcoding speed. Almost all of my movies are in 4k and I will be having a minimum of six streams at once. I don’t want any buffering. It doesn’t matter what company the NAS device is, what is the best Nas for 4k HDR content? I will be taking advantage of the remote access playing.
If you’re aiming for the best experience and no buffering, I suggest you look beyond just using a NAS as your server. NAS systems are limited in their capabilities to stream your media. Some newer models have better CPUs or support hw-accelerated transcoding, however you should get better results using a dedicated machine as your server (even a NUC or comparable mini PC will deliver a better performance than most NAS).
thanks for the reply, when you say “dedicated machine,” what are you exactly referring to? can a NUC or a mini PC stay on 24/7? What is a NUC connected too (aside from electricity and internet)? Mostly all of my movies and tv shows are in MKV format.
NUCs and Mini-PCs can stay on as long as you let them run.
Not sure what you mean by what a NUC will be connected to – electricity and network should cover it; depending on where your media is stored, you’ll also connect it to that (e.g. USB drives or NAS → via network).
Honestly, I am new to this and am so excited to do this. I am not entirely sure what a NUC is, I ran a Google search and found out. So the NUC doesn’t have the ability to store media files (but a NAS does)? So what part does the NUC play? And where would I store files (on a separate hard drive)? So how does this all work? thank you so much.
Consider this
Most new clients will support direct playback of 4K files without transcoding.
4K is more often than not using HEVC. Plex transcodes to AVC. Resulting in comparably larger files.
Oh I see, thank you for explaining that
All of my movies are in MKV format. So now that I am hooked on getting a NUC instead of a NAS, which one should I buy?
I’m not familiar with any NUC. I ran a Google search and found that the Intel NUC 11 is a good one.
Are there any better ones? Also can you provide me a direct link where I can buy it? A lot of 4K HDR movies in MKV format, I’ll be streaming remotely too.
I have no idea.
But knowing your transcoded file will use a lesser codec, become of worse quality and not become much smaller than the original (unless you really wanna bastardize it) - you really should ask yourself: Do you really need transcoding?
You could buy a cheap NAS and save a ton of money. Use that money to buy better clients if the ones you allready have cant direct play 4K.
The end result would be better.
