My PS3 only occasionally plays multi-channel files, but more often than not will generate silence.
My Fire TV Cube can’t handle them at all.
My Sony UHP-H1 no longer allows the PLEX app, but when it did it was more successful at processing multichannel audio than my Sony PS3.
Which hardware have you found effective?
Hi
I have a few albums that were commercially released and are mixed in 5.1. however they are video based with DTS/DTS 96/24 and/or Dolby Digital 5.1.
Also I acquired a few SACD 5.1 albums that had a 5.1 mix on them. I created a video using the free video maker in Windows 10 and converted the SACD 5.1 to DTS. Admittedly there is a sound degradation but it is better than nothing. I then muxed the two into a mkv file and works fine on my Roku. If you can get hold of a program that does Hi-Res (DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD) conversions then you are laughing.
Also if your hardware supports it try FLAC instead. I would have done that if my Roku supports it. I know that if I convert my SACD 5.1 to 96/24 5.1 FLAC and place it on a USB stick and plug it into my Blu-Ray player that works fine as well.

Thanks, but I should have mentioned; the multichannel files I am attempting to play are FLAC flies. Most are 88.2/24. My goal is to stream them to a device connected to my home theatre via Plex so my entire library can be accessed. A USB stick is a bit limited.
Hi again
If they are FLAC files then creating a video slideshow and muxing the video and audio files together with MKVToolNix was the option I used. I think the Nvidia Shield is the only streaming device that handles FLAC files. Other devices like the Roku and Fire stick will make Plex transcode the files to Dolby Digital.

Hi CCFox,
Both my PS3 and Fire Cube handle FLAC files, just not multichannel FLAC files. The PS3 can play some but by no means all. Fire Cube can’t play them at all.
Right OK…I take it that is through the Plex client software?
If so then I am stumped regarding the PS3 although not the Fire Cube.
Sorry…
