Why can't I do hardware-accelerated _decoding_ (cuvid) with nVidia hardware?

@ChuckPa Please understand that no one is shooting anyone. We are all on the same team.
Regarding the nvenc decoding on Linux, do you know anything more? Is it still being worked on? Is it discarded? Is there an ETA (E=ESTIMATED)? Has Plex stopped working on all local library fixes/enhancements/improvements? Where are we?

@NiclasU I appreciate your enthusiasm, but at this point @ChuckPa has shared what he is able to share. He is NOT the one responsible for the encoding/decoding portion of the code.

When the code is ready, I am sure there will be some form of announcement about it. In the mean time, hang tight.

There are a lot of changes going on right now with updating the build systems, bug fixes, etc. There is always a balancing act in terms of a finite # of resources and what the particular priorities for them are at any point in time.

Believe me, I would love it to be done too, but we have waited this longā€¦ we can wait PATIENTLY a little longer :slight_smile:

To add to what Mwc_Trexx has said,

  1. Plex doesnā€™t publish roadmaps, timelines, or schedules.
  2. I thought it would be helpful to know a few things but it seems to have done more harm than good. I need to reevaluate what I might say.
  3. Yes, I know everyone is anxious.
  4. Yes, there is a lot coming but will come in stages
  5. The new build system is what everyone sees is coming next (the Preview Beta thread).
  6. We have a huge volume of work coming. ā€œHugeā€ is an understatement IMO.
  7. No, I canā€™t give dates because every single bit of it must pass testing and until itā€™s done, we donā€™t know the exact date.

  1. Plex did let us know they were working on it, if you do that, it would be kind to let us know if it has been cancelled or not or some kind of update.
