Currently struggling to withhold my rage
I had a high number of very large Matroska files from a recent batch of BluRays, which I transcoded using Plex’s “Optimize for TV” as they were were too big for Plex to handle as they were. Given that I only use the files on Plex there was no reason to keep the original files as they were taking up space. I was incredibly annoyed to discover that when I deleted the original versions, for some reason the transocdes also disappeared. They weren’t even placed in the Recycle Bin, they were just flat out erased, and because the Matroska files were so big, they weren’t placed in the Recycle Bin either. I’ve now completely lost all of these files and have to start over again.
This is so annoying. I can think of absolutely no logical reason why anyone would have thought this was a desirable feature to have? How do I turn this feature off? Or should I not bother with Plex and transcode using other software that doesn’t self-delete its transcodes?
Yup, that’s the way PMS Optimize works. You should be able to find other forum postings in the same vein.
I use Handbrake to make my media DirectPlay/DirectStream.
The work-around to poor design seems obvious.
Go snatche that optimized version, name it the same thing and drop it in right on top of it’s fat cousin.
Then Analyze…
In a perfect world that would work… I wouldn’t be surprised if it threw Plex into a tailspin…
Let us know what happens…

I often wondered this myself. Would this work…

Yes. Replacing the original with an optimized version is fine. Just make sure you update your library so it sees the change.

Interesting. Now another thing I wondered is if you did replace the file with the optimized one doesn’t mean it’s a GOLDEN file and will play on all. Meaning you may have to optimize the new optimized version to suite any new client.
It depends on what setting you used to generate that optimized version in the first place. In most cases, you will get a MP4/H264/AAC file, which should direct play on all Plex clients. In some cases, the audio may be different, so there may be some audio transcoding required.
For christs sake can we get a replace original option already?
OMG this is super frustrating. I just optimized a series, was happy with the optimized files and decided to move them to the series directory. Plex named them slightly differently (“S01E01.mp4”, instead of “S01E01 - Episode Title.mp4”) but I was cool with the new name. So I delete the originals to save space.
Plex then deleted ALL of the optimized files. WHY WOULD IT DO THAT??? This is SO STUPID.
Edit: “name it the same thing and drop it in right on top of it’s fat cousin”. Why doesn’t plex use the same damn filename so that it’s easy to move all the files, overwriting the originals? That would help avoid what I did (and honestly, it didn’t seem like a stupid thing to do. What Plex Server did was stupid)
I second Fyb3roptik’s suggestion: add a ‘replace original’ option.
That happens because ‘developers’ don’t use Plex - so they have no idea how to make it do something useful.
Honestly, plex is pissing me off so much I’m seriously thinking of ‘any other alternative’ right now.
Yea, unfortunately ‘the alternative’ isn’t ready for prime time and Plex knows it - so there’s no real need for urgency.
I’m another dissatisfied optimiser - especially 'cos Plex has known about this little piece of design brilliance for years, and chooses not to fix it. Wonder if they know what happens to companies that keep ignoring their customer base…
