Recently, I’ve started noticing that a number of files that I had tried to watch were not playing on my PleXboxOne (Preview Program Active - still on ‘classic’ interface though)… After dragging my sorry behind over to my desk, I realised that the smaller-than-normal 720p files were actually HEVC.
I can play it locally, I can play it via the Plex web browser and via the Plex Windows 10 app thing, and it works like a charm. Sadly though, I can’t play it via Plex on the Xbox One. :-/
Just for kicks, I tried using the integrated media player app on the Xbox One to see if it would open it natively, where it totally lost its biscuits, although hardly a surprise there, lol.
Any ideas how to get it to behave? I thought they added HEVC to XBone a few months ago?
HEVC support in the Xbox One seems to be spotty at the moment. If you can’t play it in their own player, then either you have a weird HEVC file, or MS has not added it yet to their own player. 3rdparty developers gets access to new formats whenever Microsoft decides. So lets hope Plex gets access to it soon.
However, I would say that a HEVC file that is correctly done should be able to be played on the Xbox One, but PMS will transcode it. Do you have PMS installed on a machine that is powerful? If not, that would explain it.
It’s not particularly powerful, but normally if that’s a problem, it’d still try and play it… the video would just shudder and pause… however this wouldn’t play at all :-/
If possible a sample of the file that produces the error would be really helpful for the developers. H265 currently is only supported by transcoding the video stream so there might be something with the video stream that either the transcoder doesn’t like or is causing a bad output file that the Xbox won’t attempt to play.
I did try playing a h265 video and with the app it worked (With the video transcoding) but the native player gave me an error that it was unsupported formats.
