Why is This Transcoding?

There’s your problem.
You’ve got her throttled.

Open that beosh up to 30 something.

Ok opened it up to 20 meg/1080p. She will never run 4K. Will report back shortly.

It’s probably doing that 'cause Plex likes MKVs when it ‘re-invents’ something for - that thing.
Roku is always making them HLS and I’ve never seen an HLS file in my life!..lol

Bingo! Had her set it for 20 meg on her side and 20 meg on my side and we now have Direct Play!

Thanks @JuiceWSA for your help in getting this solved. You have now made my painstaking wrapper conversion work well for her!

On a side note I really hate that we have to go through these options. Its really confusing!

Illustrating perfectly the need to fill that feature request - wherein you could tell her stuff what to do. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Vote in it - for all the good it will do.

I’m pleased we got you going.
May your travels be free of incident…

unfortunately, the default plex remote quality settings are fairly low, which causes a lot of unnecessary transcoding, otherwise assuming both client and server have sufficient bandwidth between them.

if you have other remote users (or even yourself away from home), they will need to do similar settings adjustments on each remote client.

And she really can’t use MKV files on that thing?
Try one now you have the gas pedal fixed.
(if there’s an MKV restriction it’s probably for 4K)

She has a Fire streaming device in bedroom, so I def know that does not support MKV. I am willing to bet the Philips smart app will support MKV.

I have a FireTV device and it eats up MKVs like candy and does the happy dance.
If there’s trouble - it’s probably what INSIDE the MKV file, not the MKV file.

She’s gonna have to do the same bloody thing on that app as well, but the good news is you already know what to turn off and what to turn up. You put that device on some octane and she’ll be fine.

Buckle Up Buckaroo!
