Why remove photos?

Please include photos rather than a separate app. Everyone in my family used the app for home videos and photos. But now they have to use two apps.

It just doesn’t make any sense.

I assume each app will be optimised to do its specific ‘thing’ (music, video, pictures).

Genuine question - what’s the issue with using 2 apps over 1?

It is about reducing dependences for low power devices, Common sense IMHO.

The point being, now no one can view photos along with their family on the tv. Nobody watches photos on their individual phones as a group together…

Likewise for music, no one can listen on tv connected to a soundbar. We have to find other ways.

So the way that I have used Plex for 10 years that I have scanned 10,000 family photos from holidays, parties, etc. The family use these to look back on.

For the same topics, I have 1,000’s of videos and the family love them.

When friends and family come round, they are so impressed with these memories.

And it is the same for mobile devices.

Just add the photo folder and then Plex do not need to manage 2 applications. When I go to photos on my iPhone, I then have the option to look at photos and videos.

There are not many alternatives that are as good as Plex but I hope they can think again about what their customers want.

It’s not just that. Most people I know prefer to have as few apps as possible. Fewer apps mean less bloat.

more apps, more potential revenue streams.

How so, if they are all free?
And a Plex Pass attached to the user account, not the app.

and when they suddenly aren’t all free? recent history has shown they have no problem pay-walling features that were free in order to aggrandize their cash floes.

You should try something like Immich. Plex doesn’t really support photos.

It will not work on any filesystem formatted in NTFS or ex/FAT/32 and I’m a windows person.

I agree, there was zero reason for this move, and like many other I do not want 2 more freaking apps. It worked fine before, it gave my family easy and immediate access to photos, it was our screensaver for the Samsung app. We could cross reference a song in our library after watching a movie, it was our media universe and now this money grubbing leadership has exploded it for many many users, particularly those who have set up servers for their elderly parents or kids. Plex has broken their own universe through sheer hubris and I hope they regret it forever.

Is Plex still working on the photos app? It is version V0.3.0 and it needs work. For one thing, slide show would be handy. Just curious if any active development is going on for the app?

Good Question.

Being 0.3.0 zero to start indicates Beta I believe.

In this thread it is mentioned that it is to follow big tech approach

Could you not install Ubuntu with wsl and then put the docker image in there?
