Why will The Plex App on a LG 4K TV Not Play 4K in h.265

So @MovieFan.Plex why does xPlay have access to them?? Xplay direct plays all of my 4K x265… And you are right, not 10 bit, 8 bit… I can successfully direct play this movie from xplay and not from the Plex app:

Why can I direct play this in xplay but not in the official PLEX app?

@jjrjr1 Did you try xplay? You should really give it a shot. I have about 33 4K movies… And I have direct played all of them through xplay… Including this 10bit movie… That is about 40gigs in size…

XPlay is it’s own video player. So it may have access to it’s own codecs. It’s not using the built-in player, so again it’s not a good comparison of abilities.

Edit - ^^ That was my understanding of Xplay, but I might be wrong. I’ve never actually used it. It’s also possible that XPlay ignores some checks that Plex does and forces direct play of some things that Plex won’t allow.

I saw these in the 2 infos posted above.
Level 15.0 and
Level 15.3

I don’t know what these are. HEVC has a profile level simialar to H264, but there is no Level 15 that I’m aware of. The Plex app may be seeing this as an invalid profile level so it won’t direct play it.

Can you get me a quick sample file, confirming it still shows this level number, so I can run it past the devs to see if PMS or the app is reading and applying this value wrong?

@MovieFan.Plex That was the information I pulled directly out of PLEX in terms of of when you click on info about the file that it has absorbed… How about you message me your email, and I will send you an invite to my PLEX collection for testing purposes… Ill add you to my 4K channel and my x265 Channel… That way you can give it a go for testing…

XPlay is made by a 3rd party dev… So can it really have its own player?? Either way, forcing direct play would be a nice feature to have built in to your LG PLEX app… I know you can force direct play on Roku… Let me know how I can help get you more information . Thank you.

As mentioned earlier, the LG app only supports 8-bit video. The file you described is 10-bit, so that already will prevent the Plex app from direct playing. The level info I saw was just something additional. These may or may not also contribute to the file not direct playing.

Why Xplay does play the file, I don’t know. You will need to ask the dev of that program to find out. I can only say what Plex can do. It’s possible that the LG does support more than it tells the Plex App. The Pelx app tries to listen to the device and only play things that it is told are supported. The Xplay app, if it also uses the built-in player (I don’t know if it does or not), may ignore this and just play the file anyways, equivalent to forcing direct playing Plex. I don’t know if that option can/will be added to the Plex App, that is a dev decision. If not already there, you can try adding a feature request for this.

@MovieFan.Plex Ok, I understand now… The limitation is on the PLEX app… LG does support 10 bit (LG OLED) and the new LG OLEDs support 12 bit… Looking in the thread where the Dev answers all questions, I believe he is using the built in player and is just passing the video directly through… @bublikoff Feel free to weigh in on your application… All I know is that in his thread, it is widely known that we can play 10 bit movies through XPLAY (direct play).

And it is true he had a head start (or so it seems) because before I could access the PLEX official app on my TV, I purchased XPLAY… And It allowed me to direct play all of my 4K context and x265 content with ease… SO when the official PLEX app came out, it was the biggest let down to see that it did not support UHD streaming due to the need to transcode every single movie…

I didn’t mean to hijack the thread starter @jjrjr1 but I know how it is when you want to stream some of the 4K content that you have acquired. So XPLAY is the way until PLEX updates their LG app.

@hobotts
LOL
No Problem. This has been an interesting thread.
I solved the problem by putting a Roku 4 in…

The LG TV Screen Play app will direct play H.265 from an Emby server. I installed the Emby Server Software on my Plex Server and run them both on the system with no issues. Plex vs Emboy…hmmm that seems to be a tough comparison. I also hooked up a Roku 4 since the Smart TV apps/Channels on the LG are limited at best. Roku trumps a smart TV hands down.
