We have both Chromecast and Alexa/Echo in our house. Plexamp casts fine to the Nest speakers, but the Alexa speakers just never appear in the list. Apparently, it’s not yet supported?
I don’t think you can “cast” to the Alexa devices, certainly not with video (Echo Show video is either really crud or off-limits to Plex).
But you can do a “pull” from an Echo device to play things from Plex. You need to install the Plex skill, and you can ask “Alexa, ask Plex to play SONG_TITLE_OR_PLAYLIST_OR_ALBUM” and it will play on the device:

That article specifically mentions that Chromecast API is not supported by the Alexa Voice Service.
I’m not sure if Plexamp can do video? I do mean audio though;
In Spotify, you can start playing music and then select the Alexa speaker to play on, in the same list as our Nest / Chromecast devices.
In Plexamp, you can’t. Only the Nest / Chromecast devices show. I think it’s because Plexamp doesn’t support it? But since Spotify can do it, I feel like it can be added to Plexamp.
Sorry, missed that you were only mentioning “Plexamp”, but it seems I was still accurate regarding Alexa/casting:
You’re referring to Chromecast. That article I linked above is primarily telling you the steps on how to be able to play your music using an Alexa skill, but it has one nugget of info that mentions that you cannot chromecast from ANY device to Alexa devices:
Chromecast is not supported, as the Alexa Voice Service doesn’t interact with Google’s API.
Yyou will never be able to “cast” (Chromecast) to Echo devices, at least using Plex. I don’t use chromecast myself, so I cannot verify if you can chromecast to Echos using any other app/device, but it seems that the Plex devs have not been able to get apps to Chromecast to Echos, and likely never will.
I understand you like the ability to start music on your device, then seamlessly swap over to an echo device, but that isn’t possible. But if you are interested in playing the songs on Echos, you can try using the Alexa skill, but you won’t be able to “resume” your progress in a playlist or song. You will have to start over, as if you closed down Plexamp on your phone and started it up on another phone entirely (no casting!).
No problem! But I’m not sure if there’s still confusion - does Alexa not have it’s own version?
Like I said, in Spotify, I click on the cast button, the Alexa devices come up alongside and it works - so it must be possible surely?
All I want is to be able to play my Plexamp music on my Echo speakers without having to use my voice. I can do it on Spotify, I can’t do it on Plexamp, unfortunately I’m struggling to understand if Spotify can do it, how it’s unlikely that Plexamp ever will
Strange. I guess the Plex devs haven’t been able to figure out how to get Plex to cast to Echos.
If the voice part is an issue (and your request is the same each time), you could create an echo shortcut/routine that could be triggered with a button press in the Alexa app.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into that!
A step in the right direction?!

Support just needs to be expanded to Spotify and Plexamp
