Hi Guys ,
I recently upgraded my Plex server to a HP z820 with dual xeon E5-2620 , totalling unto 12 cores . It also has 128GB Ram with 32 GB of it running Ramdisk . I ‘m just contemplating on upgrading the GPU to a P2000 . My question is , will the P2000 make a difference in Hardware Transcoding with these xeon processors . I heard these processors does not do quick sync, Im not sure though . So do you guys think adding a P2000 to the server will make any difference ?. Or should I get a compatible GTX 1050 which might be cheaper ?. Thanks again guys . Cheers
Either a P2000 or GTX 1050 will work. GTX cards are limited to three simultaneous transcodes unless you use modified drivers.
Additional details:
The E5-2620 has a Passmark of 5192. It does not have Quick Sync Video, so cannot support Hardware Accelerated Transcoding (Intel Ark).
With that CPU, you can transcode 1080p video, but not 4K (What kind of CPU do I need for my Server?)
If you want hardware accelerated transcoding, you will need to add a GPU card.
A transcode consists of two parts: decoding from the existing format and encoding to the desired format.
Nvidia limits their GTX cards to three simultaneous encodes. This limit can be bypassed with modified/hacked drivers. Most Quadro cards, including the P2000, do not have the hard-set limit. The number of decodes is not limited on either GTX or Quadro cards.
The Nvidia Video Encode and Decode GPU Support Matrix shows the capabilities of each card.
Elpamsoft has Plex transcoding performance information for Nvidia video cards. Modified drivers were used to test the GTX cards. The notes on the page mention where to obtain the modified drivers.
Thanks for the quick reply mate. I was thinking that I will buy a P 2000 or a gtx1660 to do the hardware transcoding. I also hear good things about the GTX1660 since it has aTurin chip. I can unlock it to have the unrestricted streams .Perhaps I will upgrade the gpu as soon as possible . Thanks again for your reply mate. Cheers
