With Plugin Support Dead - Can Plex finally have native .NFO support?

Could we get .nfo standardized so that we don’t have to rely heavily on external software for tagging? Of additional note, this could be conceivably used to supplement anything that’s in the databases at large as well as help with matching.

Adding to the growing number of users who wish for NFO support. While editing metadata in Plex isn’t the biggest challenge, it can get cumbersome for larger quantities of content. There are numerous tools out there to create NFO files in bulk and make it easy to edit.

It seems trivial to add this support. If an NFO file exists, overwrite any local database data with that from the NFO. And the library scanner just has to check for a recently modified time to look for updates.

As mentioned, this would allow for custom content, easier to manage, etc. For those unaware of NFO files or who don’t use them, no impact. But for those who do, a massive win.

I see that Guillaume Boudreau has written agents for movies and TV that read local nfo files - but I cannot seem to locate one that does that for music, Is there one and I just cannot find it?

Sad that this isn’t implemented yet

Why is this not an option? I’m now on hour 6 or 7 of trying to get an old plug in to work, and have gotten to the point where I’m writing a Chrome Extension. At this point I could have manually imported all of my NFOs. Why is this not supported?

Totally agree with the direction nfo files are going and would be a great additional feature to the already impressive plex platform.

However, if plex can extend it to audio/music files/collections that would be AWESOME! Everytime I rescan my library all my edits are gone, it’s enough to drive me to another platform!

So… when are we getting native NFO support? People have literally made plugins and released them for free. I didn’t pay them anything.

I’ve paid Plex.

Since I moved from Kodi to Plex I have really been missing NFO agent support, since I now have hundreds of files for which I am missing metadata information. Is it really that hard to implement, or is there another reason?

For the love of god, please add this feature. Nfo files are an industry standard and users should be allowed to customize their artwork/collections on their libraries.

As others have pointed out before, it is just a more stable format and allows for easy Plex setup if users are constantly migrating machines or rotating disks.

Not to mention i have plenty of media that isn’t just mainstream movies - family videos, sports, education. They’re all just a mess in my Plex Library. It makes no sense to allow adding “other videos” in Plex but not give users the ability to use an industry standard way for sorting and organizing their media?

You’ve already dropped plug-in support and it’s basically it’s on its deathbed, if we can’t use third party plugins for NFOs, then this feature must be standard before you finally do away with plugins.

Added another similar request that might interest you guys:

I use a plugin agent called XBMCNFOmovieimporter and the TV variant. I use Emby to get my info and then scan into plex. It’s so much faster for me, especially for TV shows.

Come on Plex!! why not just support .nfos instead of this? Match Hinting for TV Series | Plex Support

I had to shake my head at this new feature as well when I saw it this morning. Support for .nfo files already exists for movies (for IDs anyway), so why not stick to the old XBMC/Kodi standard of supporting a tvshow.nfo file at the series level and allow for scanning IDs there?

Yeah, it is a bit crazy that they’re reinventing the wheel on this one.

Regarding the tags. I have set up pull requests for the plugins that should resolve that behavior.

Unfortunately, it seems noone is maintaining the plugins anymore

I use Plex, but it’s horrible with German TV Shows …
I have all with nfo files, but plex ignores this.
Lokal Information, that is fully scraped, should be used.
I Stay on Kodi and use Plex only for DV / DA playback …
I dont retag ~3000 TVShow Parts …
So please, Import NFO Files, because many Users wants it.
Ps. I Think many could Change from Kodi to Plex when they dont must rebuild the whole Library!
