With the release of PlexAmp, can we please finally get music library management that isn't terrible?

Plex really needs a “Composer” tag, which I believe is already included in modern file tags anyway. This is essential for classical, but actually quite useful for any genre because of cover songs. Most every modern media player has this, even Windows Media. A “Conductor” tag would be nice, though less essential.

Better support for additional contributing artists would be good too, as Sprongfeld alluded to.

Yeah, agreed with these.

This is a little more ambitious than some of the other suggestions, but it would be great if we could tag multiple “Additional Artists” similar to genres. That way we can mark Kind of Blue as a Bill Evans and John Coltrane album, or tag The Highwaymen as a Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard (et al) album.

Hey Elan, I’ve send you a DM with one of the tracks from the screenshot I’d posted; properly tagged with embedded 1000x1000 pix album artwork in jpeg format. Plex won’t even acknowledge that there’s custom artwork in the file when I try to manually edit the tracks.

And I replied, since the track worked perfectly for me in Plex extracting that artwork. I’ll need more input from you on what could possibly be different about your setup.

  • fixing LMA

As I explained, I’ll need further input from you, since it’s working over here.

Based on your own tests, it doesn’t seem like it’s actually working for you…? Your setup is able to see the embedded artwork, but ignores it; it seems like you have to go in and manually select it, unless I’m missing something…? I was under the impression that setting up Plex to prefer LMA would force Plex to use the embedded file assets (like cover art); it’s not super helpful if I have to manually change the covers for thousands of albums.

  • add ability to sort by Album > Artist

I assume you mean by track artist, as we discussed before.

No, I mean Album > Artist; like the existing All > Album > Album Artist, but using the Artist tag data instead of Album Artist tag data

  • fix alphabetical sorting – why is ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ listed under “T”, and ‘A Perfect Circle’ under “P”?

This is a feature; if you don’t don’t like it, you can edit the Sort Title and change how the sorting works.

How does this feature work? Is there a global setting for each library? Near as I can tell, what you’re suggesting is that I manually edit the info of every album I own in order to get it to sort in a proper alphabetical fashion?

  • in sort by Album, have albums appear in chronological order. The PlexPass “Premium” music library is supposed to scrape extra metadata for everything; surely it scrapes album release dates?

That sounds like a good suggestion, I’ll file it internally.

  • have ‘Various Artists’ albums sorted into the mix alphabetically in Album sorting view. As an example, the list would show Andrew Bird > Blade 2 OST > Charli XCX. This is admittedly a tougher ask, since it’d involve some sort of code that would force Plex to sort anything tagged with “Various Artists” by “Album Title” instead…

Yeah, that is tougher for sure; you can customize sort order for each artist already when you’re viewing their albums (edit ⇢ advanced) but it’s harder in a single grid view.

FWIW, I like this behavior.

Okay, more basic things that Plex needs:

  1. A quick search should do an “or” based match. So if I search for “bob highway”, I should get Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited, and if I search for “Aretha Chain” I get Chain of Fools. This is a pretty standard feature.
  2. I can’t see any way to make sorting by plays or by rating in Grid View actually show the play/rating value, even though it does for Date Added or Last Played or Release Date. Why isn’t this standard for every sorting mode?
  3. Also it doesn’t seem you get any of this info at all in Summary view - when you sort by last played in summary, you don’t even see the date.
  4. Relatedly, the list view for artists and albums is missing some of the aforementioned fields - like why can’t I see the number of plays for an artist, even when I can filter by it? The way some of these secondary fields are set up doesn’t make sense to me.
  5. Reordering and resizing columns.
  6. Should be able to view a playlist in the same list format as browsing your library, including sorting and column toggles.
  7. I already said this but to consolidate my requests in one place, the aforementioned Composer field (and secondarily, Conductor).
  8. An easy way to make a smart playlist update immediately (what exactly triggers the update?)

These things would be nice but not essential:

  1. Multiple images for an artist that we can set to automatically rotate over time.
  2. Let us use key combinations (like shift-click) to quickly have the play button Add to Queue or Play Next.
  3. Touch the names to quickly jump to artist or album in the mobile app without the “…”
  4. Set shuffle “stickiness” - how likely it is to play the same artist consecutively.
  5. Sort by more than one column (eg, by Year and then by Plays as the tiebreaker).
  6. As mentioned above, more robust support for tagging multiple artists on an album/track.
  7. Let us create a smart playlist with a random selection of the filtered tracks (would be useful mainly for syncing).
  8. A setting for how much of a song needs to play before it is logged as “played” if you skip or switch to something else.

If any of these are already in and I missed them let me know.

To each his own! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
It doesn’t make any sense to me, personally; the band is named “The Strokes”, not “Strokes”…

Any progress on creating decent sorting options for music collections? This is a feature that people have been asking for for literally years, now. I get that development takes time, but I’d argue that creating more useful sorting options would benefit far more users than, say, adding news features to Plex. Being able to access and manage thousands of albums in Plex is kind of meaningless if everything turns into a big, chaotic garbage dump once it’s added to the library.

@Sprongfeld ~ you can set the sort title to be The Strokes and customize exactly how the ordering is performed.

@jwjoslin ~ that’s a good list, at least some of them are filled internally and/or long-running wishes of mine

Any chance on a plexamp app for iOS & watchOS @elan?

@elan Better support for classical music would be amazing too. I think that might be as simple as support for Composer -> Composition -> Movement, at least in the beginning.

What you’ll see is some Plexamp awesomeness moving to the mobile apps to make them better for music (which I think is really what the root desire is?)

Yeah, agreed.

Can you tell us any that may be coming soon?

Yes, but unless I’m mistaken, that’s a manual process. No offense, but for obvious reasons, I’m not super keen on having to go in and manually edit the album info for literally hundreds of albums just to get my music collection to sort properly.

I know it probably sounds like I’m being a d!ck about this, but really all we’re asking for are basic QoL enhancements; Plex doesn’t need to be completely re-engineered, we’re just looking to add add better, more intuitive sorting and management options for music/audio libraries — options that have been pretty standard in other music apps for ages. It’s pretty disheartening to see that you’ve dumped a pile of time into building, say, Plex VR, but can’t dedicate a handful of man-hours into adding a bit of functionality into the music side of things. Arguably, quality of life enhancements and bug-fixes for music libraries will benefit far more Plex users than something flashy and complex, but niche, like Plex VR.

I would argue that playback (gapless, transcoding that actually works on android) needs to happen first. If I bust my data plan with 1 album because Plex “forgets” to transcode my FLAC files, the rest is kind of worthless.

While I do look forward to music improvements, I would also like to see a stand alone mobile app for music/audio libraries. I think listening is a very different experience than watching. Though listening certainly can be active, often it’s more passive and you want to find the track/album/playlist quickly, so you can get on with other activities. I would add, that’s probably why Apple has separate built in media apps, and not mobile iTunes, which of course is hated for bloat.

This is one of many threads asking for improved support of embedded ID3/Vorbis tags.

Since all votes were lost with the new forum changeover, I have taken the opportunity to rework one of my ID3 tag feature requests into a more comprehensive request for tag support.

This would be a great opportunity to consolidate all the votes that were spread across so many threads before, and maybe get some much-needed attention. And now, everyone can vote!

Hey Plex, crew! Any movement on this? It’s been literally YEARS, and music management is still awful in Plex. For the love of all things holy, we’ve gotten friggin’ VR implementation of Plex (that almost nobody uses), but Plex for music is still limping along. Tons of great suggestions in this thread, and AFAIK, not a single one has been implemented, yet? Not even a fix to the totally broken LMA problem. Plex is still inexplicably pulling hilariously low rez album artwork from, like, old Geocities pages, I assume, rather than using the high-quality embedded artwork in the .mp3 files (or the separate high-quality cover.jpg and/or folder.jpg files that sit in the album folder). What gives, Plex?
