Wol - Wake On Lan

Really disappointed that this WOL has not been included yet.

+1
Send a magic packet. So easy. Pls implement!!

+1 This post was made in 2013 :frowning:

5 years, come on plex, make it happen.

Yes please, a vote yes from me - this is obvious and there is no reason not to, is there?

dangit. I was hoping there was a WOL feature.

+1 Would like to see this too.

+1 please on synology

+1 please. Would definitely be a welcomed feature.

@Orionshock Wow what a stupid jerk
sorry but can you not think just a little bit further??? What if you are not in home and you dont want the Maschine always running. Just running when you need it etc
thats why the humans need WOL
not because they are too lazy. Maybe that would be case for you but dont think all People are the same as you
some are just smarter

BTW
you can enable WOL on a Wondows Machine everytime if your NIC does support that. That must not be implement by PLEX. For me its also working as it should. If you know how WOL works and your NIC suppports it, you just have to enabled it in the BIOS and ind Windows and you are fine.

Edit: Also on a synology it is already available
In the Settings under Network you have to enable WOL for the NIC. You can download a little WOL tool and wake up your synology. There is nothing needed by PLEX thats why i am sure they will not care about this topic

Here is another long post about WOL
Please, Plex can you get on this
or at least tell us what you are thinking here!?

WOL is a non-sense for a server, this is why it’s ignored since 6 years and will never be, so I down-vote the WOL feature. You should have your connexion always UP, and computer sleeping. This is possible. Cf. Wake on LAN (WOL) for Windows 10 PLEX Media Server when in sleep mode. Is it possible?

ARP address is aging in switch and there is only reality distortion to maintain the table. Plus some switches with energy saving that shut the port and destroy your magic WOL packet. Solution vendor based on WOL just lie to you as it’s not 100% reliable event on LAN. There is too much reasons to have WOL not working.

Just wondering why this has only 11 votes to-date

Is it that users just don’t know that one has to hit the vote button in the first post

Because if you have a server it should be running all the time so WoL is not necessary. I am guessing most users use their Plex Media Server as an actual Server.

I have seven Plex servers working
6 use WOL all the time to wake up each afternoon . The one server is a low powered system that does the housekeeping tasks. It wakes the others with a WOL magic packet from a scheduled task. This save me a lot just on power.

What I would really like to do is have a process that watches the LAN for the PMSaddressIP:32400 and when it see it sends the WOL to the machine if it’t sleeping.

Well not all Plex Server running 24x7. WoL feature intergrated with Plex will be great to save energy and generate less heat (i am living in tropical country where room temperature is around 32c here). Currently have to wake it manually by sending magic packet over the internet (i have set the win 10 pc wake only by magic packet, putting it wake by other packet means my pc will not go to sleep mode as my environment heavily run by IoT devices (CCTV, smart home devices and etc)

Hope admin kind consideration to add this feature to the coming version.

Hi everyone,
I have just come across this WOL request thread and thought I would forward you on a thread I created and have been updating continually. If you have a Windows 10 Plex server, this will more than likely solve your WOL problems with a comprehensive guide:

Please enjoy:)

For most users it’s just their PC or Mac, so it is actually rather necessary function to have

This Feature would allow to save electricity, as Plex is not always used. And PC would wake up on demand, and it would be nice if plex apps would give a message “waiting for pc to wake up”

I would really would like this feature! I currently use the WOL in plugins, but plugins is being phased out.

Could you possibly solve the story of WOL with the Plex Dash app. Even if it is only possible locally. @elan

I would also appreciate a shutdown countdown for the server. My server only runs for me when I’m at home. I even exhibit it at night. A countdown or a one time off timer would be useful for this. So a shutdown on LAN and a countdown.
