Thanks for the suggestions! Not sure I follow the countdown timer, though
You want the app to shut down the server after X amount of time?
Yes, exactly understood. As an an example. I come home and turn on the server via WOL (stands in the attic). I watch a movie in bed in the evening and would like to set the server to shut down in three hours. Most of the time I sleep in the movie and in the morning the server is still running unnecessarily.
I once had an app for it (Touch Remote), which unfortunately is no longer programmed and unfortunately flew out of the Play Store.
If these functions were included in Plex Dash, I would save additional apps.
Iâm currently using WolOn - Wake on LAN and turn off the server manually using the MS Remote Desktop app.
I had something similar in windows and to turn it off automatically I used AMP WinOFF 5.0.1 http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/WinOFFEsp.php Configured so that as soon as the processor use drops for 5 min below X and the network traffic for 20 min for example below 25 kb that hibernated it ⊠and it was always perfect for me: D
What did you use for X ?
I think I remember 5% but the best thing is for each one to put the values ââthat work best for them âŠ
Was just curious since iâm using 5% and 5 min, 3kb 20 mins both directions
both required to sleepâŠ
I would love WoL for my Mac OS plex server. I want to save power
@elan The lack of proper support for WOL has so far prevented me from using Plex a my main media setup.
In an effort to save energy around the house, I canât justify to have the Plex server running 24/7, when I might not use Plex every day or just for an hour or so in the evening.
You should be able to setup the PMS to automatically put the server system into a low-power standby-mode after a user defined period of time (basically set a âcountdown timer of inactivityâ). Plex clients should then be able to wake the system back up via a WOL-package call.
Also, the Plex DVR should also be able to wake up the PMS when a recording has been scheduled.
Come on, we all need to save on energy and not having your server run 24/7 would be a good start.
Way to bury this decades-old request (prior to this âofficialâ thread) by disallowing any âduplicatesâ while allowing countless dupes of other throw-away requests that vary by very slim means.
Bottom line is that the Plex Team doesnât care about global warming, electrical usage, nor about the massive costs of running always-on media servers which are used only hours a day.
Good to know !
I will not say that it is in any way beneficial to not avoid having your server âsleepâ to some extent or even fully when not being used. However I do question âmassive costsâ as powering drives and other electronics up and down several time a day increases wear and tear (thermal shock and other wear factors) and the increased costs of hardware may well offset the power gains of cycling the power.
I run a three computers and about 13 external drives none of which is allowed to sleep and my power bill is not outlandish at all. Also all my appliances are electric and that adds to my electric bill.
My power bill each month is not cheep but neither is it too high.
I am not opposed to the idea of WOL but I also do not see it as needing to be a priority at all.
Sorry, I made a duplicate post. I highly vouch this
