I have noticed that Plex seems to be playing the “wrong” audio stream for some of my films by default.
From what I can tell, this problem seems to occur with movies which have the original film audio is on a mono track and the commentary is on a stereo track. I’m not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but I just noticed a pattern. Notably, my entire Plex collection is stored as .mkv files.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Any fixes? Thanks.
Take a look using MkvToolNix to see which audio track is marked as a “default” track. With those (I’m assuming) old films, maybe the commentary track was marked as default by accident when they were originally ripped.
This cannot be solved by marking an audio track as ‘default’. Plex does ignore the default tags.
OP has identified the issue correctly.

Plex is tying to be clever and thinks commentary tracks are in mono while regular movie audio is in stereo. But this can be reversed with old movies.
