Wrong audio stream (i.e. commentary track) is played by default for some films

I have noticed that Plex seems to be playing the “wrong” audio stream for some of my films by default.

From what I can tell, this problem seems to occur with movies which have the original film audio is on a mono track and the commentary is on a stereo track. I’m not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but I just noticed a pattern. Notably, my entire Plex collection is stored as .mkv files.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Any fixes? Thanks.

Take a look using MkvToolNix to see which audio track is marked as a “default” track. With those (I’m assuming) old films, maybe the commentary track was marked as default by accident when they were originally ripped.

This cannot be solved by marking an audio track as ‘default’. Plex does ignore the default tags.

OP has identified the issue correctly.

From what I can tell, this problem seems to occur with movies which have the original film audio is on a mono track and the commentary is on a stereo track.

Plex is tying to be clever and thinks commentary tracks are in mono while regular movie audio is in stereo. But this can be reversed with old movies.

1st things first: which client type is this?

The movie audio is the default track. I try to minimize these types of potential errors by just using MakeMKV

I’m running Plex Media Player on Mac OS

But the screen shots you shared above are not made in PMP, right?

Ahh. My fault for not being clear. Those screenshots were taken from the iOS app on my iPad.

This problem is the same across all of my devices: iOS app, Apple TV app, and the Plex Media Player for Mac OS.

Is Plex remembering the correct audio track after you have selected it?
Even when going to a different client and playing the movie over there?

Yes. But for other accounts in my household (ie, my parents) Plex does not remember the correct audio track that I selected in my account.

That is normal, the track selection is stored per user account.

So we have here an example where the default mechanism to determine the best audio track is failing. I will file that as a bug.
