Yes... another question about transcoding.. (help needed)

Hallo PLEX users…

I think I need help from some smart PLEX users about transcoding.

For several years I am a very satisfied user of PLEX media server.
I started my plex experience on a Synology DS218+.

After a few months, I found out that I was running out of space and decided to switch to a DS918 +.

now almost a year later I again lack space and with increasing users also power.

To expand space there are a number of options…

  • Replace disks for larger ones.
  • Synology DX517 Expansion Unit. (€ 500,- ??)

But with expanding space, I don’t have a solution for my trancoding ability yet.

Because in recent years I have done a lot of experiments with software (mostly home automation)
I think it would be very nice to build something myself.

So I am now considering building a media server myself.

I have tried to get information about the best way to transcode and I can’t quite figure out when it makes sense to use GPU transcoding.

As far as I can gather information, does GPU transcoding work when the CPU (intel) has Quicksync video?

And is the best choice to choose a small CPU in combination with an Nvidia GPU? or should I go for a heavy CPU?

Any information is welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Using an Nvidia GPU does not remove the CPU load requirement for Audio and Subtitle processing. You still need to handle this case.

This having been established, the -7xxx and -8xxx CPUs with QSV capability (be careful as some dont), will handle much more video than the CPU can handle with the remainder of the work load.

If building, then an i7-7xxx or its refresh (-8xxx) will serve well.

I personally can run 6 concurrent streams (2160 -> 1080) with audio transcode.
It can do more but I can out of clients .

I do recommend searching . There are MANY other threads and builds already in progress and also completed.
