Group Multiple Plex Servers

Hi

Just an idea, but I think it would be nice if you could group/display similar content regardless of where it is stored.

Example: I have Server1 and Server2 both with a TV Shows section.

Rather than Server1\TV Shows  & Server2\TV Shows just have SomeName\TV Shows which includes both servers.

When sharing libraries, it would keep things tidier. People I'm sharing my servers with could just browse one location.

Hope that makes sense, thanks for reading.

This would need to be fully configurable option to allow for aggregation of library sections for owned servers.

As I said in your original thread - I see this as the stepping stone towards implementing distributed processing and workload distribution providing the means to separate the media into a number of 'cooperating' Plex Media Servers.

Similarly, we should be able to group "shared" content from remote users, alongside owned/native server content.

The fact that Plex likes to hide "shared" server content, means that when I set my mom up to watch Plex at her house (from my server), she has to navigate to "Online" (firetv app), and then pick the library she wants. But if she were to forget that first step, I wouldn't blame her for thinking that no content was showing up, and that my server was perhaps offline... Ridiculous really.

Distributed processing would be great!  That way when my NAS is taxed, all I have to do is turn on a computer with PMS running with the same account and have it automatically transcode instead.  There is no way to do this currently, correct?

Quoted from my thread.

With the new releases on various platforms, Plex brought us rich home view with suggestions and such but made sections less accessible. While this does offer convenience of picking media, it also added inconvenience for multi server users.

Instead of showing all the available sections across multiple servers (PHT), one must switch between servers to access media in other servers. It wasn’t the most elegant solution to begin with as I would have multiple sections called “TV Shows” or “Movies”, but it did offer me one hub to access all my media.

I think it would be nice if there is an option to create unified home/section with all the media across multiple servers.

Obviously there are potential issues with duplicate media as they’ll have their own watched statues and metadata. I propose that duplicates are simply not shown. One can choose primary server and media from the primary would only be shown in case of duplicate.

Obviously my idea isn’t most polished one, but something similar to bring multi-sever experience smoother would be nice. Or simply having the option to use classic PHT UI (of listing all the sections, easily accessible) would be okay.

What do you guys think?

I actually for a start only want what Plex Home Theater already does: I have 2 local servers (no overlapping content) and I don’t have to switch between the servers to reach all content.

Agreed. I’m just moving from a media PC to an Nvidia SHIELD and was disappointed that I need to go out to settings and manually switch servers whenever I want to move between my local server and a shared server I use. Especially annoying using a TV remote. I actually don’t particularly care about intelligently integrating all the content, I just want to see the media categories for both servers all listed. Seems like it should be a simple checkbox option to add.

I want to know exactly who owns the rights to the media I’m looking at. If it’s mine I want to know it, and I don’t want my stuff lumped in with someone else’s stuff. I have users that already assume they can tweak the settings higher than what I have asked them to use, because the client app allows the user to select their own settings for bandwidth. If they are sharing with someone that has higher settings than mine, they won’t change their clients back to the settings I want them to use.

If we had bandwidth limits already in place from the server side I wouldn’t care one wit. Since we don’t, I care a lot. Since there are no controls for concurrent users with multiple streams this is also a potential bottle neck.

Maybe I’m too ■■■■ about it, but when one user is taking up too much of my bandwidth and not abiding by my rules, I want them to know that it’s mine, and not theirs. Lumping them all into an “easy to browse” interface isn’t something I can support until we get the tools to deal with the problems it will create.

@cronix Yes, this is it.

I would love, really love, this feature.

You just share one group to your end users and can add and change servers without them noticing.
The more advanced option would be adding transcode-only servers that just transcode the media.
(Maybe with options to each do a percentage of the load, starting with the slave servers for example)

I tried to use multiple servers and each do a portion of my media library but it gets confusing.

Yes please! This would solve my nr. 1 problem atm.

I’m glad that PHT seems to stay alive as OpenPHT and as in the old PHT I don’t have to jump from one server to the other to reach my media.

Nevertheless I would appreciate the merge of the servers in all newer players. You can put it as an option in the settings, if you prefer.

This would be amazing! Having two servers in different locations, it would be great to be able to display them as if they were one server and then play content seamlessly from the necessary location, or if both servers have the same content, from the server with the best connection.

This would be stunning to add my cousin’s server all in one place and have mine right there for him as the rest of the family aren’t overly technically savvy to switch servers.

Noticed that Synology uses > 90% CPU during transcoding. It would be nice if I could spin up multiple instances of Plex Server across my home network so that when 5 people are watching videos in the house, things are still smooth. I’m happy to pay extra for this feature :). Thanks!

Would definitely be a welcome addition to have Plex have multiple servers while access same storage array. Not only would it allow us to add storage capacity but CPU capacity across multi devices.

+1. This would be very helpful. We have a Plex server in two different locations. This would greatly simplify things!
