Thanks, we’re looking into this.
Oops sorry I just created a post describing the exact same problem.
If some admin can close it, here is the URL : https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/221895/3-0-17-plex-preventing-computer-to-go-to-sleep#latest
I’m seeing the same behaviour but only noticed it with the latest 2 releases I think
Just to make sure, are you guys still seeing this on 3.0.24?

I’ll install 3.0.24 tonight and let you know.
Awesome, thanks for your help!

No problem. I had to uninstall .23 because it killed my SP3, so I’ll be one happy camper if you’ve solved that one!
There’s been a lot of changes since 3.0.23, so I just want to make sure the issue is still there before I commit to tracking it down. Did it kill the battery even if you never ran Plex and just left it installed?

I don’t remember. I installed this 1.5 hours ago and ran it, then closed it by clicking the X in the right corner. Just ran a powercfg /sleepstudy and this is the result:
It’s still a problem.
@kegobeer-plex: how much was the drop in battery charge? I’ve tried with my Surface Pro 3 and got 8% charge drop over 2h50m playback. It showed 23% active time in PLM. I also tried with Microsoft Groove for 50 minutes and the battery level dropped 9%. There might have been other stuff running in the background when Groove was playing, so I’ll need to repeat the test, but I don’t think 8% playing back over Bluetooth for 2h50m is out of the ordinary. I guess I’m not running into the same behavior as you are.

I’ll have to test again for you. I’m not concerned about the drain while playing, it’s the drain that I see when the SP3 is sleeping. The sleep study image I posted is activity during sleep, after I stopped playback and closed the app. The active time in the image is almost exactly the same amount of time the SP3 was asleep. Prior to sleep, I had the app open and active for no more than 10 minutes.
Hmm, I tried that (starting Plex, playing some music and exiting the app), and it spent 4% battery in 1:50:48
Why is the app still functioning during sleep? I’ve never seen that behavior with other apps.
It shouldn’t be, and it isn’t as much as I can see on my machines
Can confirm that I am seeing the same behavior over here. Plex seems to be active a lot, even when the computer is sleeping. I am using a surface book, and would be happy to send over my sleep study report. Had 7% battery drain over an hour and fifteen minutes of sleep, and according to the sleep study the new plex beta seems to be the cause.
Based on what I am trying to interpret in the sleep study the cause seems to be: Plex.Tasks.AudioPlayerBackgroundTaskRunner
This is with 3.0.25
@mashuto: that confirms my suspicions regarding the source. Are you able to send me your log files just after you witness the drain? To get the logs, you need to open the app and email the diagnostics info to yourself from Settings/Advanced
. In particular, the interesting file will be a PlexBackgroundAudioPlayer.log
@pombeirp turns out that I didnt have logging on initially, but I enabled it earlier, then set the computer down and shut the lid to put the computer to sleep. Had it asleep for about 40 minutes or so and definitely still seeing the same behavior.
As for the logs, I do not have a log titled plexbackgroundaudioplayer.log and I will walk you through the steps I did here to reproduce what I was seeing, and to see if you can help me better get the information you need.
Inside the Diagnostics.zip file I have the following files: LiveTileBackgroundTask.og (and .1), Plex.log (and .1), Preferences.xml and ServerManagerState.xml
I opened both of the log files and they both only go back as far as number 5 above, when I opened plex again after I woke the computer from sleeping (which I am guessing is because the logging happens in the foreground and since I shut it down, it couldnt log, then when I booted back up, it wrote over the old logs).
My sleep study that I ran again after I woke the computer up shows the same behavior though, plex was active 96% of the time while the computer was asleep. And the same thing too, AudioPlayerBackgroundTaskRunner.
So, if I was to open plex but not close it before I put the computer to sleep, should it still be able to continue logging, and give me that log file you mentioned? I will probably give that a try anyways shortly. But please let me know if there is anything else I can do to get you the information you need.
Thanks for the awesome bug reporting and insights @mashuto! I’ve made so findings regarding the shutdown procedure when the app is closed by the user, so I’m hoping there will be a breakthrough in the next release due soon (fingers crossed).
@pombeirp no problem, I am software developer myself so I know thats its often good to get as much information as possible, especially when you cant reproduce the bug itself.
I do want to add though that I booted my computer up earlier today, used it for a few minutes without ever opening plex, then put the computer to sleep. Ran another sleep study just now and I am still getting the same results, with plex showing as active 99% of the time during sleep. And this is without ever even opening it up manually (though I do see it running in the background processes in task manager).
I will look forward to the next version and run some tests when it comes through to see if I am still seeing the same thing.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do!
