Plex will continue to collect usage statistics, such as device type, duration, bit rate, media format, resolution, and media type (music, photos, videos, etc.). We will no longer allow the option to opt out of this statistics collection. https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-policy-update-notice/
As a paying customer this is simply unacceptable. I don’t want my Plex usage analyzed in any way. Guess I’ll have to start blocking Plex domains on a network based level soon.
It gets even worse:
When you use the Services to watch, listen to, or record content […] use of our Live TV and DVR service, we may collect information related to that media interaction. For example, we may collect what program or movie you are watching and when, your interaction with any static or video advertising, etc. We may also collect your device information and device location, for example, by using your IP address or by asking for your zip code. https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-policy-update/
I’ll add my voice to the disappointment with the removal of the opt-out of statistics collection. As a paying customer this feels particularly unacceptable and it may impact significantly my opinion of the product going forward.
I don’t particularly enjoy being turned from a customer to the product.
Yes, I’m seriously considering dropping Plex now. I’ve been onboard since the OSXBMC days but I really value my privacy so unless they change it will be goodbye.
Well, it certainly explains what the team has been “working” on. This is turning into exactly what we thought it was, even though it was denied with a straight face.
Welcome to Plexflix, where the customers are the product and beta testers…
I’ll be honest, taking away the ability to opt out of analytics from paying customers is pretty aggravating to say the least. I could understand enforcing this for free users, but I don’t like becoming a product. If you want to know device type, duration, bit rate, media format, resolution, and media type (music, photos, videos, etc.) ask your users, don’t arbitrarily collect.
The question now is will this affect existing versions of server, so if we don’t update to whatever version gets pushed in Sept, are we still vulnerable.
I purposely only paid for 1 year in advance for about 4 years because I like to support the application. all my friends have bought life times my privacy is extremely important to me and now that you have introduced a potential point of compromise into my network I’m likely gonna have to switch to a new media manager. But rejecting the ips and ports should be trivial
Lucky me, its now canceled ,one day before renewal , thanks plex for reward your loyal customers with this insult . Company´s are collectin to much info nowdays on customer it´s to much, we need our privacy again

And of course they send out the information on a friday afternoon/night. Classy Plex, classy!
No one gives a crap what time it’s sent out and it makes zero difference. Quit whining about nothing and wine about the actual issue.
Actually you would be surprised by the studies on this. It indeed does make a difference, just the same as telling you that your job is gone. Days of the week can make a difference.
I’ve been a Plex user and Plex Pass lifetime member for many years, this is disgusting. Server will be froze on version that allows me to opt out, and I’ll have trouble recommending Plex to others.
Yeah, I’m with all of those rightly upset by the changing of terms after many of us have already paid. I get that this seems to be (so far, anyway) just for the LiveTV & DVR services with which they’re going to partner with others (and thus want to be able to squeeze the most money out of these relationships), but this is still unacceptable to do this to your paying customers.
