FR - Plex Home - Common accounts

Not sure if this would be possible but in any family environment, I'm sure very useful...

With Plex home, now, all family members can have their own account, with their own watched/unwatched, partial played, etc...

But, during movie nights, when all members watch a movie together, only one of those accounts can be used (leaving the others unaware of the watched movie...)

My idea is to be able to create a "common accounts" (or "family account") in which we would be able to associate other home account.

When using this "common account", whatever happens using it, will replicate to the associated accounts.

Does this make sense?

An umbrella account. Or a parent account.

I'm not sure of the best way to implement this, but it is certainly something I'd make use of.

For me, there are planned "movie nights", but there's also the times I am watching something, my wife walks by, takes an interest and before you know it we've both watched the entire show. Not sure if there's a good way to solve for my "flyby" scenario... maybe an option to pause the video and there's a pop-up menu like where you can adjust subtitles and whatnot...

Regardless, we run into this all the time even before Home as she has her own Plex.tv account.

Was just about to post this as a requested feature.  I think it seems like a natural evolution of Plex Home and I hope that the developers will add it in the future.

I forgot to mention this, but it would be nice if the "common account," "family account," or whatever you want to call it had limited content based on the most restrictive limits for a given group of users.  For example, if my brother wanted to watch a movie with his wife and 6 year old son and they logged in under the family account, only G or PG rated movies would show up.  This wouldn't necessarily be all the time, as it could be an option to turn on or off.  Or an option to restrict the group based on a selected individual account, not necessarily the most restricted.

At this point the most important thing for this feature request is just allowing multiple users to be logged in at once.  The additional suggestions would just be a nice touch, especially for families with small children.

You can already create a family account and have this logged in in the family environment with the maximum restrictions your familiy would like.

Plex would never know who was actually in the room. Perhaps a “Family recently watched” list could be populated that can easily be toggled watched for every user when they are logged in.

This wouldn't really solve anything about the individual accounts... The point of this account would be to replicate the activities to the associated accounts so that when one of those goes back watching stuff alone, the items watched with the family (common/family account) would be marked watched there as well...

Create a "combination managed user" where the administrator can add however many users he/she wishes. Administrator can create combinations of users who commonly watch TV together. This would take care of majority of this issue. Joining in mid show or movie would have to be done manually. At most it'd be one episode or a single movie which wouldn't be a big deal.

This is very similar to the post at:

I think that method of simply adding Additional Viewers to a session on the fly works very simply and allows accurate watch lists. There are of course other issues to be resolved for what to show as On Deck, etc… but having the basic functionality gets us going.
